1st Chair and Tryouts Chair:
2nd Chair and ESE contact Person: Dear 4-H Horse
Project Member,
Welcome to the 2009 Maine 4-H Eastern States Exposition Equestrian Team
Tryouts! We are glad you are trying out this year! Please note that you
may download this and add lines if you need more space to write in.
Whether you are attending for the first
time or you are a veteran, you will need to read this packet very
carefully! Please read the entire record before you begin to fill it
out. If you have any questions, contact your County Extension Office
or the Horse Committee Chairs, names and contact information on
preceding page, for answers.
We will be including drivers again
this year. There will be classes offered to these drivers as part of
their equitation classes, both having on the rail and a pattern
component. All horses will be judged in Fitting and Showmanship.
Tryouts will be held at the
Skowhegan State Fairgrounds in Skowhegan, Maine, June 26, 27, and 28.
All participants will be expected to arrive no later than 6:00 p.m.
on Friday, June 26th. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
with orientation. NO arrivals before 4:00pm on Friday.
This year we will be requiring a cash $10.00 stall fee
in order to recoup some of the cost of the ESE tryouts. There are some
scholarships available, contact Kate Slattery for an application.
All
rules in packet apply. Please review these rules carefully as there are
some revised rules and some new rules. You will receive a postcard after
the packets have been scored in late May. You are responsible for all
the forms at the end of this packet, for yourself and your groom.
Please fill out and bring to tryouts. We look forward to seeing you
at the Maine ESE Equestrian Team Tryouts!
Participants (riders, teen leader and grooms) will be required to sleep
in the dorms. Please be prepared to sleep in the new barn. It has a
concrete floor and 4 -foot walls, some might want to pitch a tent or use
tarps inside these stalls. We are required to collect camping fees from
chaperones staying in campers, tents or trucks. We have been instructed
to collect $15 per night from anyone using the water and/or
electricity by the Skowhegan Fairground Association. Tent sites
without hook ups are available. We want you to be aware of this in
advance of attending tryouts. Sincerely,
Please note that Teen Leader applicants
need to fill out the Teen Leader Packet, which is different from the
Rider Packet.
Eligibility and Rules for Maine 4-H
Eastern States Equestrian Team Tryouts
You are
required to be currently enrolled in the 4-H horse
project.
New and
re-enrolling 4-H members trying out for Eastern States must enroll
in their 4-H club or as an independent member between October 1 and
December 31 each year. The information you supply in your packet
must be for the current 4H year (October 2008 through April
2009).
Members must
have ownership or lease of horse by April 1, 2009. Nursing mares
are not eligible for Eastern States and therefore are not eligible
for tryouts. The horse used for tryouts and Eastern States, must
be your 4-H project horse during the current 4-H year, and must be
listed on your 4-H Animal Approval form, which must be signed and
dated by your Leader and your County 4-H Staff Person who will
emboss it by April 1, 2009 if you intend to
tryout.
Horse brought to
tryouts must be your current 4-H project horse and be recorded on
your Animal Approval Form, filed with your County Extension Office
no later than April 1, 2009. With State 4-H Office approval,
a substitute horse may be brought to tryouts provided the animal is
a 4-H project registered with the county 4-H Office by April 1,
2009, and you present a Veterinarian's Certificate stating the
reasons the original animal cannot participate in the tryouts.
Apply for State 4-H Office approval immediately in case of a
substitute.
Please
Note:
If your 4-H project involves more than one horse, you are encouraged
to list all of your 4-H project horses on the Animal
Approval Form. Only horses listed on Animal Approval Forms filed in
the County 4-H office by April 1 may be brought to tryouts or
exhibited at the Eastern States Exposition.
All horses
brought to tryouts are required to have been annually
vaccinated for rabies on or before June 8, 2009 to be current. All
Maine horses must have had a Coggins Test valid between June 20,
2006 and June 28, 2009. Out-of-state Horses must have had a
Coggins Test between December 20, 2008 and June 21, 2009.
(See vaccination page) If you make the team, you will need a Coggins
valid no earlier than 6 months before we return from ESE.

This is what the
State Office is going to require this year as far as EVH and EI with Dr.
Hoenig's input: "4-Hers attending 4-H horse events in 2009 must provide
proof of vaccination for EVH-1 and Equine Influenza in addition to a
Coggins test. Horse owners may administer their own EVH-1 and Equine
Influenza inoculations and a sales receipt will be sufficient evidence
for proof of vaccination." 28 Jan 2008
Maine 4-H members may attend Eastern States in up to, but no more
than, two commodities for which they qualify, in any given year, as long
as their participation in two commodities does not prevent the
participation of another 4-H member who would be attending in only one
commodity and if the two commodity programs at the Eastern States
Exposition do not conflict or overlap during the Exposition.
Whatever
seat you try out for and make the team in (i.e. driving, hunt,
saddle, or stock), you must participate at ESE in that same seat.
You are not allowed to change seats after tryouts. Should you need
your substitute horse at tryouts, and you ride your substitute horse
in another seat, but this is the horse and seat you will show at ESE
if you make the team.

but not have turned 19 years of age on or before January 1st
of the current year.
