Frequently asked questions about
volunteering:
How can I become a 4-H volunteer?
Do you like birdwatching, cooking, gardening or working with
animals? There are many interesting projects and fun things to do as
part of 4-H. Imagine a young person's satisfaction at learning a new
skill, at doing a job well. Imagine your own satisfaction at watching a young person blossom. You can help our young people as
they gain self- esteem - an essential ingredient for happy, productive
citizens.
How can I
become involved?
Whether you want to be a club leader or work with kids on a
short-term project, there's a role for you in 4-H.
Leader:
Through hands-on activities, help children ages 5-19 develop social
skills, and to learn and grow. Share your skills, talents and
special interests such as photography, horses, dogs, rabbits,
community service, computers, whatever is best for you.
Chaperone:
Provide transportation, or simply go with a youth group to a special
event or activity.
Short-Term
Volunteer:
Teach a special interest program or assist a 4-H group with a
special project.
Do I have
to have children to be a 4-H leader?
No. 4-H volunteer leaders simply need to enjoy spending time with
children and youth, and be willing to help them learn and develop.
Do I have
to know a lot about a subject to be a leader?
No. Volunteer leaders solicit help from other volunteers. In
addition, volunteer leaders can attend training to help them feel
more comfortable and knowledgeable in specific areas.
Whom do I
contact?
Do you know someone in 4-H? Ask him or her what they do, and how
you might fit in. Or, contact your county's Cooperative Extension
office (below) and ask for the staff member with 4-H
responsibilities.
