Safety when Heating your Home Important to Remember When Winter Sets In

Fire departments tend to see an increase in house fires this time of year due to people trying to heat their homes using dangerous methods, such as firing up an outdoor grill inside or the opening the oven door for warmth.

There is a correct way and a wrong way to heat your home, and employees at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension are doing their best to help make sure Mainers stay warm and safe.

Kathy Hopkins of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Somerset County office is available to talk about safe ways to heat a home, how to winterize a home, and programs that Cooperative Extension is participating in this winter to help Mainers stay warm.

Home Heating Safety: Fires and accidents caused by home heating equipment are largely preventable if you clean, maintain, and use equipment properly. Review general safety tips as well as those specific to electric and kerosene space heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces, and heating emergencies.
