University of Maine Cooperative Extension operates three 4-H Camp and Learning Centers in western and mid-coast Maine. Each facility provides unique opportunities for adventure camps that will appeal to a diverse array of youth, in summer and in winter.

All programs are designed to build self-esteem, trust, teamwork, friendships, and appreciation of nature through outdoor adventures. Camps are led by staff of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Centers and key outdoor education and adventure partners.

Maine Military Adventure Camps — 2012

Tanglewood / Blueberry Cove Offering

River to the Sea Canoeing Adventure
July 22 – 27, 2012; 6 days and 5 nights
Ages 14 to 17
$10 registration fee includes a Tanglewood Water Bottle

Master the skills of flat-water, river, and ocean canoeing on this 35-mile river to sea adventure. Explore the St. George River from Appleton to Port Clyde through cool ponds, roaring rapids and ocean currents. Campers will build self-esteem and relationships through the teamwork necessary to successfully explore freshwater and coastal waterways safely.  They will learn and practice wilderness survival skills, leave no trace camping ethics, flat water, river and ocean canoeing, ocean kayaking, map and compass, first aid and prevention, and natural history.  Highlights of the trip will in the thrill of accomplishment of high adventure water travel, views of the river from private campsites and marine explorations.

Travel information for families arriving from out-of-state:

Tanglewood will be using the Bangor, Maine airport (BGR) as the arrival and departure location for families travelling by air to Maine.  Please plan to arrive at the Bangor airport between 10AM and 2PM on Sunday, July 22.  Plan to book departure times for Friday, July 27 between 1PM and 4PM out of the Bangor, Maine (BGR) airport.

There is reimbursement for up to $200 on airfare per camper.

**Please send a copy of your travel itinerary to Tanglewood so we can plan for arrivals & departures**

Travel information for families arriving from Maine or New England:

You are welcome to travel directly to Tanglewood in Lincolnville or to catch the shuttle bus we will be providing from the Bangor Airport.  Drop off and pick up times will be determined at a later date.  We will notify you 3 weeks prior to the program with times.

For families traveling by car, you qualify for $0.44/mile, up to $200 reimbursement on gas mileage.

Bryant Pond Offerings

Adventure Racers
August 5 – 10, 2012
Ages 14 to 18
$10 registration fee includes 4-H water bottle

Campers will summit peaks in the rugged Mahoosuc Range, get soaked paddling rapids by canoe on a nearby river, mountain bike down forest trails, sleep under the stars on the flanks of Mt. Christopher after finding their way to the summit by map & compass, test their nerve on the water zip-line, be challenged on our high ropes course. Campers will be part of a true adventure race team and take part in a raft challenge on Lake Christopher for both fun and team building. Participants build team spirit through group flags, names, and chants to support their race team.  This program is operated in partnership with Bethel Outdoor Adventure, White Mountain National Forest, and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. This program is designed to challenge teens to explore group dynamics through the truly difficult team challenges. Racers learn about challenging their own comfort zones, supporting others through team experiences, and all about the team leadership elements necessary for success.

River Runners
August 19 – 24, 2012
Ages 14 to 18
$10 registration fee includes 4-H water bottle

Climb aboard for adrenaline and adventure on some of New England’s most intense rivers. Start the week off learning whitewater canoeing in class 2 and 3 rapids. Learn to spot river features and steer your boat even as waves crash over the bow! Later in the week, test your skill as you and your camp-mates raft class 4 rapids on the Penobscot River. Cruise over huge standing waves by day and camp out in beautiful rustic shelters and remote primitive campsites by night. Hang out by the fire with your campmates or simply lie down and enjoy the stars. River runners is more than just a whitewater trip, it’s a true Maine adventure!

Military adventure families traveling by air:

Campers should arrive at the Portland International Airport (PWM) located in Portland Maine between the hours of 10am and 4pm on Sunday. Departing flights should be scheduled for Saturday, prior to 1pm if possible from the Portland Maine Airport.
