Patty Wilbur was awarded with a University of Maine Volunteer Pen Award at the Washington County Extension Association Annual Meeting on April 10th at the Pembroke Elementary School.

Patty has been a 4-H Club leader for many, many years. She started Horse Power 4-H when her children were members and still continues to lead the club despite the fact that her children are grown. She has so successfully modeled volunteering that both her daughter, Jaime, and her son, Josh volunteer for 4-H as well. The three created and held a dog show last year at the Cherryfield Days’ Celebration, an amazing opportunity for area youth.

Congrats Patty!

Lisa’s Corner

CLUB EXHIBITS FOR JAMBOREE

In just a few weeks, I will hopefully see many of you at the Hancock County 4-H June Jamboree at the Blue Hill Fair Grounds. I want to challenge every club and school group to find time this month to put together their 4-H Club Exhibit with the theme “Why 4-H?” This is a great chance for your group to share about your experience of 4-H, so bring your imagination and teamwork to the table and go for it!

For those of us new to the idea of club exhibits, these exhibits will follow the exact same format as that for club exhibits for the Blue Hill Fair – in fact, they can be submitted for judging again just as they are or with improvements to the Fair in September. Often these are made using tri-fold poster board with or without additional props, photo books, and other elements, but as long as your group follows the parameters for creating your display – must not exceed 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide and must be able to stand alone – the sky is the limit.

As you start your planning and brainstorming for your exhibit, think about the following:

Does the exhibit express one idea?

Is it creative and imaginative?

Is the title creative and catchy?

Is it prominently placed?

Is the lettering neat and of an appropriate size? Has the use of color and placement been considered?

When planning the exhibit, can it be recognized at a distance of 6 feet?

Have you included a neatly printed 3” x 5” card which includes: club name, town and county?

So have fun and create – I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Downeast Region 4-H School/Group Reports

Trenton Elementary School

Our vermiculture learning has continued with the creation of “vermicondos” – we each made our own worm
home using tennis ball cans – recycling and
composting at the same time! Our worms in our worm bins are happy and healthy and munching away at our vegetable and fruit scraps.

Meanwhile, K-2nd graders participated in the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom READ ME program with volunteer Carl Karush and Lisa Reilich leading an interactive exploration of how important plants are to our lives.

Trenton Elementary

Mount Desert Elementary School

The 4th grade is well on their way with their duckling project. So far they have worked with math and probability in determining how many of the 15 eggs they started with were actually fertile and confirming that by candling the eggs, the answer was 12. Then they looked at different eggs cracked open under the microscope to learn about the parts of the egg. The students are sharing many responsibilities, such as checking temperature on the incubator and hand turning the eggs. The live webcam is allowing them to monitor their eggs while away from school – the eggs have been seen wiggling and jiggling all by themselves! April 27th is the expected “Hatch Day”, so look for news next month on how that went.

Training is being offered for interested 4-H Youth Leaders and Youth Educators throughout Maine (dates below). The training is free and open to interested volunteers, though registration is required. Participants will learn about the history and science of phenology, and about ways this information is helping scientists, resource managers, and others working to understand, predict, and adapt to ecological changes related to climate change. You’ll gain practical experience for observing and recording plant and animal life cycles in your own backyard, school- yard or other community location while contributing valuable data. You’ll also learn how to add your data to the national online database hosted by the USA-National Phenology Network. Signs of the Seasons staff will also introduce a series of educational activities that can be used to support and enrich 4-H Youth participation in the program.

Upcoming Training Opportunities: Blue Hill, ME – May 5, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

To register, please contact the Knox-Lincoln County Cooperative Extension Office: Pamela Doherty pam- ela.doherty@maine.edu or Esperanza Stancioff esp@maine.edu; 832-0343 or 1-800-244-2104.
For more information, please check out our website: http://umaine.edu/signs-of-the-seasons/ or to request special accommodations, contact Esperanza Stancioff at (207) 832-0343 or (800) 244-2104 (in Maine), or e- mail esp@maine.edu.

Fiddleheads, an early spring delicacy throughout their range, are the young coiled fronds of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). Nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but those of the ostrich fern are unlike any other. Ostrich fern fiddleheads, which are about an inch in diameter, can be identified by the brown papery scale-like covering on the uncoiled fern, as well as the smooth fern stem, and the deep ”U”-shaped groove on the inside of the fern stem. Look for ostrich ferns emerging in clusters of about three to twelve fiddleheads each on the banks of rivers, streams, and brooks in late April, May, and early June. Make sure that you have landowner permission before harvesting fiddleheads.

For information on fiddleheads including safety of consuming, harvesting, cleaning, storing, cooking, freezing and canning (including a video), and recipes visit University of Maine Cooperative Extension and continue reading publication #4198 Facts on Fiddleheads.

Washington County Public Speaking Tournament Results

No one is a loser when it comes to Public Speaking. This year participants had a choice between doing a Demonstration or an Illustrated Talk. What a nice variety of topics and happy smiles. There were certificates, beautiful ribbons, gifts, snacks, and an appreciative audience. What more could you ask for?

Those that went on to the Regional Tournament were Paige Bell, Hope & Jewel Carle.

Behind the scenes were committee members Jane Bell, Regina Grabrovac, and Lisa Reilich. Special thanks to our judges Lisa Bartlett, Nancy LeClair, and Sharon Kiley Mack.

Specials thanks to all our helpers including Oona and Asher Molyneaux who, in addition to presenting were on hand two hours early to help with set-up, and Ginny Esford who took all the great photos.

East Coast Equestrians Club Attend Everything Equine Event

Marcia Westrack reported the following, “Five girls from our club and I went to the Everything Equine. We had a good day other than being really cold. We learned about horse conformation/judging, giving a horse an examination and checking health, and saw an ultrasound on a mare in foal. The girls also watched a demonstration on retraining Standardbred horses for riding.” The Maine 4-H Equine Science Committee presented EVERYTHING EQUINE, a day of learning and fun at Witter Farm at the University of Maine on Sunday, March 11.

Working Steer 101

On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, Tide Mill Farm hosted an informal yet well attended introduction to Working Steers. Cindy Kilgore, Livestock Specialist from the Department of Agriculture, shared much knowledge and education about raising working steer. Finn Furth, a new 4-H member of the Dennys River Manure Movers, shared his two new calves (Jake and Stacker) for the purpose of measuring, matching composition and tattooing. Although the wind blew bitterly cold, much warmth was shared over this exciting new endeavor on the part of the Furths and Bells. Currently, there are only two clubs in the State of Maine that meet with the purpose of raising working steer. It is unknown how long it has been since a pair of steer were raised in Washington County as part of a 4-H project. Welcome Finn, Stacker and Jake!

Also present were: Elizabeth McEvoy, DVM, State Veterinarian from the Department of Agriculture; Renee Blais, Veterinary Technician student; Jonah Furth; Rachel Bell; Nathan Horton; Carey Crosby; Nicole Willey, 4-H Program Aide for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; many additional family and community members; and Jane Bell, family member, 4-H Volunteer, and coordinator of the day’s events. Thank you, Jane!

Save the Date- The Hancock County 4-H June Jamboree will beheld once
again at the Blue Hill Fairgrounds, June 1st – 3rd. This is a great event for an
overnight or daylong school group fieldtrip, as well as a fantastic chance to have
a whole-club event. 4-Hers, guests and families from Hancock, Waldo & Washington counties are welcome to participate. They may arrive Friday afternoon,
June 1st, beginning at 3 pm and stay over for fun activities and games as well as a camp fire.
Youth may also arrive Saturday, June 2nd to participate in livestock and enrichment workshops beginning at 8:30 am and concluding at 4 pm. Our keynote speaker this year will be Brett Thompson, the Worm Wiz, to share with us a fun talk on worms and vermiculture. We will also have our usual cookout lunch.

New this year will be the opportunity to present club and school exhibits for judging with the theme “Why 4-H?” Club gardening exhibits may also be submitted. What a great way to end your 4-H group’s school year or to get a jump on the club exhibit for the Blue Hill Fair!

Especially exciting will be the return of mentoring for youth involved in livestock projects. Youth enrolled or interested in livestock projects are invited to stay over Saturday night and participate Sunday morning in the following livestock project tracks: Beef, Dog, Goat, Horse, Sheep.

Full schedules, information and registration forms will be in a separate mailing or in the May newsletter. Registration deadline will be May 18th and workshops will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a small registration fee this year to help cover expenses of $1 for 4-H youth, $2 for guests, with a maximum of $5 for a 4-H family. Hope to see you there!

Regional Public Speaking Tournament

The 4-H Regional Public Speaking Tournament, held on March 24th at the University of Maine at Orono, was a huge success and learning opportunity well enjoyed by all. Of the eleven youth presenting, five were from Hancock County, three from Washington County, and three from Knox-Lincoln Counties. There was a wide array of interesting topics shared, and the audience of just under 50 people all left with something new that they did not know before they came. For youth from Waldo County, who came to observe the tournament in the hopes of participating next year, they learned that public speaking and demonstrating can be fun!

We were especially fortunate to have a great group
of volunteers to help make this event go smoothly.
From Washington County, 4-H Leaders Jane Bell
and Regina Grabrovac put in countless hours as part of
the Regional Public Speaking Planning Committee making sure all the materials that help youth prepare and judges do their judging were just perfect. Thank you to our volunteers. Without our volunteers, events like these just would not be possible.

The awards were as follows: Blues were awarded to:
Elexis Dubose – Hancock Cty, Junior Illustrated Talk — also Overall Public Speaking Tournament Top Honors & Junior Illustrated Talk Top Honors
Paige Bell – Washington Cty, Junior Demonstration — also Junior Demonstration Top Honors
Jewel Carle – Washington Cty, Senior Illustrated Talk
Katlyn Sargent – Hancock Cty, Senior Illustrated Talk
Katlyn & Jewel tied for Senior Illustrated Talk Top Honors

VOLT Training – There will be a VOLT (Volunteer Ongoing Learning and Training) at the Hancock Cooperative Extension office on Saturday, April 28th, 9 am – 2 pm.

Please encourage anyone interested in 4-H to call the office for an application. This will give a volunteer the opportunity to start a club, assist a club, be a school volunteer, chaperone, or just gain more knowledge of 4-H.

Clubs and Schools please let us know what is going on with your 4-H projects and with the 4-Hers. We want to hear from you!
Welcome to Mount Desert Elementary School – our newest 4-H School Group!

Mount Desert Elementary, with around 160 students in grades K
through 8th, is off to a fantastic start with 4-H! Thanks to all the
great efforts of 4-H site leader and volunteer Julianne Kearney,
Mount Desert Elementary School students have already had the
opportunity to participate in the 4-H National Youth Science Day
Experiment “Wired for Wind” (7th & 8th graders under the
mentoring of science teacher Brian Cote), have taken on 4-H
community service by participating in the Hancock County Food
Drive, and will soon be doing a 4-H Embryology project by incubating and hatching duck eggs in the 4th grade. More 4-H science enrichment programming will be coming to K to 2 grade MDES students in the spring.

For the 7th & 8th grades, their foray into wind power with the “Wired for Wind” experiment in the fall inspired them to take their investigation of this alternative energy to a higher level. They are now hard at work on their own “Wind Challenge” Science Fair projects, creating and testing different wind turbine blade designs and materials to see which team can harness the most energy from wind.

Check out all the great 4-H happenings at MDES at their new 4-H School Website, soon to include a live webcam of the 4th grade incubation project! http://firstclass.mdirss.org/~jkearney/?OpenItemURL=S00CDAA61

Ella Lewis Grammar School – In March, the 2nd Grade class wrapped up their 4-H public speaking projects. What a fantastic job all did! With topics from “How to Tie a Shoe” to “How to Read a Thermometer” to “How to Read Fluently”, the students demonstrated their expertise on their chosen subjects and kept their audience of 3rd graders very engaged.

The 3rd Grade class completed their public speaking presentations in late February and had the 2nd graders as their audience. They also did a fine job. Their hard work and good examples were well evidenced in the learning the 2nd graders did to help create their fine presentations.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade had fun with 4-H volunteer Carl Karush learning about seeds and the different parts of the vegetables we eat through song, story and hands-on exploration. This was part of the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom READ ME program.

Trenton Elementary School – In the Trenton Elementary School’s afterschool program, we had great fun learning about vermiculture and setting up two different kinds of worm bins. Investigating the worms first, students had a chance to hold the worms, find their parts, and observe their movements for awhile. Then we set up a tray style vermiculture bin with the help of 4-H leader Steffanie Roguski. We also set up a worm bin using inexpensive plastic tubs by drilling holes in them for ventilation and using window screening to keep the worms in their new house. Would your school like to try vermiculture, too? Trenton Elementary School received their worms and supplies as part of funds donated to 4-H Afterschool Programming by The First Bank in 2011. The students are excited to give back to 4-H by donating worms they grow to other 4-H schools and/or clubs who might like to get started in vermiculture as well. It’s a great way to create new soil for pot- ting plants, to make compost tea for fertilizing plants, and to see how composting works. Get in touch with Lisa at the UMaine Extension Office if you would like to see about starting this exciting project for your group.

Morning Song School Cooperative – Members of the Morning Song Orchestra performed two benefit concerts this month – one to help raise funds for science programming for youth at the Humboldt Research Institute and the other to help raise funds for the H.D. Moore Parish House and Library in Steuben where many of the school’s classes are held. From penny whistles, to ukeleles, to accordians, saxaphones and electric guitars, the orchestra is one-of-a-kind in both its range of instruments and musical selections – and always well received!

A Cairn Terrier is a very active dog that may not run loose. The dog will always need to go outside on a leash, on a dog trolley, or be kept in a dog-safe fenced-in area.
