UMaine 4-H Science Saturday: Where There’s Smoke, There’s Chicken

Youth in grades 9-12 are invited to join us Saturday, October 28th from 11am-3pm at Witter Farm on the University of Maine campus in Orono to learn how to prepare delicious smoked chicken with our own Dr. Colt Knight! First, we will learn the art of preparing a whole chicken, and learn about how to safely handle raw chicken meat. We will explore how to include chicken as part of a healthy, balanced diet, as well as talk about different ways to season and prepare chicken meat. And finally, we will be enjoying our smoked chicken for lunch.

Oxford County June Jamboree Livestock Clinic, Working Steer and Horse Clinic

Oxford County June Jamboree Livestock Clinic, Working Steer and Horse Clinic is being held June 29th through July 2nd at the Fryeburg Fair Grounds, 1154 Main Street, Fryeburg Maine. Workshops are designed for sheep, swine, working steer and new this year we will be offering horse tracts on Saturday and Sunday. We have a vet providing rabies vaccines.

There is a $20.00 registration fee, which includes meals starting with breakfast on Friday morning and tent or camper space. You may arrive Thursday evening after 5:00. Adults and youth must preregister to help with meal and activity planning. Youth who do not have animals are welcome to attend and learn about the 4-H Animal Science Program. Everyone is welcome to join us for a Canoe Trip on the Saco Friday morning! Get to know other 4-H members before the workshops begin. Canoeing is open to everyone. Parental supervision required.

Have you ever found yourself wondering what exactly a mineral is? Where gemstones come from? What about the differences between a gem and a mineral? Join us to find out! From addressing mineral misconceptions, to identification, to an exciting scavenger hunt, you can learn all about Maine’s minerals and gemstones with us!

10:00 am – 1:00 pm on March 25th for youth in grades 6 – 8 at the University of Maine in Orono; cost is $10, and includes lunch.  Registration deadline is March 17th.

State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl

Dairy Quiz Bowl Tryouts will be held Sunday, February 19, 2017; at the University of Maine at Augusta, in Room 218 of the Randall Student Technology Center (RSTC).

Quiz Bowl Tryouts are open to all enrolled 4-H dairy project members ages 9 – 18. National 4-H Trips are excellent opportunities to meet 4-H members from across the nation. Participants learn about many career options, and learn through educational workshops at National 4-H Congress, or become a part of a team making recommendations to the National 4-H Council at Conference. Any Maine 4-H Youth, age 14 to 18, is eligible to apply. Applicants must be current Maine 4-H members both at the time of application and the time of the actual trip. Application packets must be sent to your county office and postmarked by March 10, 2017. Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF)

Start making plans now to visit our Nation’s Capital during the week of July 1 – July 8, 2017. CWF is a leadership program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school youth ages 14 to 18. Delegations of 4-Hers from across the country spend six days touring the city and attending leadership skill-building workshops. This summer, the Maine delegation will travel down on July 1, and travel home July 8, 2017. You will stay at the National 4-H Conference Center just outside Washington, DC. Visiting the most popular sites in Washington, DC will be a part of the trip, including spending the 4th of July in our nation’s capital.
