SUMMARY:Maine 4-H Ag Ambassador Program
DESCRIPTION:Our team of professionals from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H program is creating a program to provide agricultural education and leadership experiences to Maine youth ages 13-18. Youth involved in this program will have opportunities to pursue their interest in agriculture and explore career pathways. This includes mentoring in post-secondary opportunities\, as well as sparking a passion to investigate and explore current issues around food systems\, livestock\, crop sciences\, aquaculture\, climate issues impacting food systems\, food equity\, and more. There is no requirement to have previous 4-H membership\, this program is open to all Maine youth with an interest. \nThese opportunities will begin with a creation of an online learning community cohort and will also include in-person experiences on the UMaine Campus. This program will provide youth with an opportunity to connect to local agriculture and identify their role in the Maine Food System. \nTopics covered in this program include: \n\nExploring participant’s skill sets and areas of interest within agriculture\nDiscovering opportunities for careers in agriculture\nBuilding relationships with industry professionals\nInvestigating local Food Systems\n\nFor teens that are 13-18 years old\, we invite you to join us for our Ag Ambassador program this spring! This will be an opportunity to connect with other teens from around the state to explore and share your interests in the Maine food system\, agriculture\, climate change\, environmental justice\, and where all these interests collide. DESCRIPTION:Our state public speaking tournament will be held on April 8\, 2023 at DP Corbett Hall on the University of Maine campus. Youth must qualify for this event by achieving a score of 78 or higher at their county or regional tournament. This virtual 4-H citizen scientists club encourages youth to practice citizen science in their own backyard\, with a variety of citizen science opportunities to consider\, and report their observations while making connections with fellow citizen scientists in their community and around the state.  Along the way\, we’ll learn about Maine ecology and how you can participate in research by just taking a picture. \nPlease note that the ability to get outside in between sessions and collect observations is a must. Participants must have access to a durable digital camera (a phone is fine)\, and guardian support for posting observations to the online platform. This workshop is supported by Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine. SUMMARY:Androscoggin/Sagadahoc 4-H Monthly Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties 4-H program at their monthly workshops – the Third Friday of every month (unless otherwise noted) from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Lisbon Extension Office at 24 Main Street. Anyone interested can contact Melissa Freeman or Cathy Gray to find out more information. \nOctober 21\, 2022\nApples! – We will be making homemade applesauce using locally sourced apples.  Youth participants will take home one container of applesauce. \nNovember 18\, 2022\nCard Making – Learn to make a specific design using stamps and decorative papers.  You can also make up your own design.  Participants will go home with at least two cards. \nDecember 16\, 2022\nGame Night – Come hang out with your friends (or make new friends) in the Teen Lounge Area.  We have lots of games for large or small groups.  Feel free to bring snacks! \nJanuary 20\, 2023\nDigital Marketing – Have you ever wanted to advertise your event\, group\, or special cause but were not sure how to get the word out?  Learn how to create digital posters for use on social media! \nFebruary 17\, 2023\nShort Film Making – Looking for a creative way to share your story?  In this workshop\, youth will learn how to use digital storytelling to create their own short film to tell a story of their choosing and then be invited to show their short film at the Movie Premiere in April! \nMarch 10\, 2023\nSpa & Relaxation Science – “Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts\, feelings\, bodily sensations\, and surrounding environment\, through a gentle\, nurturing lens\,” (University of California\, Berkeley). This workshop will help with that by teaching participants to make their own relaxation/spa items and learn some fun science as well! \nApril 21\, 2023\nMovie Premiere – This event will feature all of the short films that were created from the Short Film Making workshop.  Popcorn and drinks will be served for this fun-filled evening! \nMay 19\, 2023\nWool Spinning Workshop – Learn the basics of spinning at this fun workshop designed just for kids.  Youth participants will play with drop spindles\, wool\, and a spinning wheel to see how wool yarn is created.
