Prepare by making sure your animals and yourself are ready. Study the manual for information and make sure you are practicing with your animals at home! Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2025\/04\/ESE-requirements.docx.pdf\">tryout requirements<\/a> to make sure that you know the tryout process and are prepared for the events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Submit Intent Form:<\/strong><br \/>\nESE 4-H working steer intent forms are due May 15th. Forms can be submitted online <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd4FaREGXW7xEkwAZSzfRu1B49MT4iMWFm6C0Hduy_zNVPIwg\/viewform\">here<\/a>. These forms do not commit you to attend, but let the team coordinators know that you are interested so that they can provide you with tryout and team information to help you make your decision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attend two of the three tryouts:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn order to qualify and be a part of the Maine ESE Working Steer Team, you must attend two of the three tryouts. There are three tryouts this season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Qualify for Participation:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn order to qualify for the Maine ESE Working Steer Team, you obtain 28 points at qualifying events. The points are taken from your best two out of three tryouts. Points are determined based on the written test and ribbons awarded.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Classes and Age Requirements:<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are three classes at each qualifying show: fitting &amp; showmanship, cart, and drag. There are two age classes,\u00a0 Juniors ages 9 &#8211; 13 and Seniors ages 14 &#8211; 18.\u00a0 Birth dates as of January 1st. Please note that you have to be ten years old to go to Eastern States as a competing member. Cloverbuds are not allowed to compete in Eastern States tryouts.<\/li>\n<li><b>Didn&#8217;t qualify for participation? You may be able to participate as an apprentice. <\/b>If you are trying out for Eastern States and did not qualify to go as a competing member, you are eligible to go with the team as an apprentice. Responsibilities are close to that of competing members.\u00a0 You will be responsible for herdsmanship, helping the team at the event, and participating in team fundraisers.
