The activities range from the importance of aquaculture as a way of meeting the seafood demands of the future, to exploring how aquaculture operations can be beneficial as erosion control methods if carefully designed and engineered.\u00a0Activities are appropriate for youth in 6th &#8211; 8th grades.\u00a0The Innovations in Aquaculture\u00a0toolkit, developed in partnership with Maine EPSCoR, is based on the National Science Foundation supported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/seanet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">SEANET (Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network) program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A short video has been produced by the University of Maine to introduce the types of organisms farmed in Maine through aquaculture, and the methods used to farm them. The video &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/f3zsb90lETQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">What Is Aquaculture? (YouTube)<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; may help you introduce aquaculture to youth.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Activity Series\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-1\/\">Activity 1: Kelp Forest Towers<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-2\/\"><strong>Activity 2: Fishing for the Future<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-3\/\"><strong>Activity 3: Aquaculture and DNA<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-4\/\"><strong>Activity 4: Variations in the Clam Species <i>Clamys sweetus<\/i><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-5\/\"><strong>Activity 5: Waves and Erosion<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/stem-toolkits\/innovations-in-aquaculture\/activity-6\/\"><strong>Activity 6: Aquaculture Entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The activities are designed for the middle school (grades 6-8) audience but may be adapted for other age learners.
