Common descriptions: cloudy, murky, hazy, muddy, opaque, clear, colored<\/li>\n<li>Dissolved and undissolved materials affect turbidity<\/li>\n<li>Particles that settle out of water do not affect turbidity<\/li>\n<li>Turbidity has to do with how light is scattered when it hits the water. These norms are intended to help youth have productive, respectful conversations. Reminding youth of their norms helps youth to remember to follow their norms.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Engage<\/strong> (5-10 minutes)<\/h3>\n<h4>What is turbidity?<\/h4>\n<p>As a group, discuss and agree on <strong>a definition of \u2018turbidity\u2019<\/strong>. Use provided turbidity pictures to help develop ideas of what turbidity is.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KLEWS: have youth fill out K column prior to the discussion. Following discussion, write the definition of turbidity in the S column.<\/li>\n<li>Journals: have youth brainstorm about turbidity on page 10 before and during the discussion. Following discussion, write the definition of turbidity on page 9.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If needed, use the following questions to prompt discussion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you see in these pictures?<\/li>\n<li>How do you describe the water in these pictures?<\/li>\n<li>This characteristic is called \u2018turbidity\u2019. Let&#8217;s agree on a definition of turbidity. (Students should eventually agree on a definition that includes the color and cloudiness of water.)<\/li>\n<li>Why does the water in these pictures look this way?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Explain<\/strong> (15-20 minutes)<\/h3>\n<p>What changes turbidity?<\/p>\n<p>As a group, discuss <strong>how turbidity can change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ask youth: have brought up and agreed on (most\/some of) the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rain (weather)<\/li>\n<li>Heat (evaporation)<\/li>\n<li>Soil runoff (e.g. farms)<\/li>\n<li>Rock type (what minerals are in the nearby rocks)<\/li>\n<li>Currents (water velocity and flow, e.g. estuary)<\/li>\n<li>Tides<\/li>\n<li>Wind (greater effect on shallow waters, where wind can whip up waves)<\/li>\n<li>Point source pollution (e.g. factories, farms)<\/li>\n<li>Change in land use (e.g. disrupting soil or changing vegetation)<\/li>\n<li>Fun fact: Salt ions bond to suspended solids, making the material heavier and more likely to settle out of the water column, thus increasing water clarity and decreasing turbidity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>How does turbidity affect aquatic life?<\/h4>\n<p>As a group, discuss <strong>how turbidity affects aqueous plants and animals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ask youth: \u201cHow can turbidity impact plants and animals living in water?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KLEWS: brainstorm in of sunlight (plants)<\/li>\n<li>Amount of food (filter feeders)<\/li>\n<li>Suffocation (bottom dwellers) due to silt buildup<\/li>\n<li>Fish\n<ul>\n<li>Eyesight (ability to find food, or to see 1024px) 62vw,600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate soil erosion:\n<ul>\n<li>Fill the bottom of a bottle with potting soil.<\/li>\n<li>Run water through the bottle into the turbidity tube.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to run water through the tube until you are no longer able to see the black and white disc at the bottom of the turbidity tube.<\/li>\n<li>To measure the turbidity of the model, record the water level using the centimeter ruler on the side of the tube.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Explain to the youth that each group will be building a filter model. Each group will have the chance to run water through its soil erosion model with its filter.
