EVH-1 and Equine Influenza are considered effective for six months. Plan the timing of your inoculations with your last event in mind.<\/p>\n<p>It is recommended that your horse is current on EEE in consultation with your local practicing veterinarian.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Horse Disease Information<\/h3>\n<p><strong>EIA &#8212; Equine Infectious Anemia<\/strong> (swamp fever), a viral disease, spread by biting, infected \u201chorse flies\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical signs: high fever, labored breathing, exhaustion and high pulse<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: there is no vaccine or treatment other than supportive therapy. Infected horse should be isolated immediately.<\/li>\n<li>Prevention: controlling the disease via Coggins testing every 3 years for intrastate travel and testing annually for interstate travel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rabies<\/strong> &#8212; life threatening neurological disease. Spread by infected saliva.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical signs: abnormal behavior, dull, depressed, aggressive, fearful, uncoordinated, difficulty swallowing, muscle tremors, convulsions, unable to stand<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: none<\/li>\n<li>Prevention: annual vaccination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>EHV-1 &#8212; Equine Herpes Virus<\/strong> (Rhinopheumonitis \u2013 rhino), spread with direct or indirect contact with virus laden nasal discharge, aborted fetus or placenta.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical signs: fever, nasal discharge (clear &amp; congestion), mild to severe paralysis, cough, abortion<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: isolating horse, introduce good hygiene management<\/li>\n<li>Prevention: annual vaccination and good sanitary practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Equine Influenza<\/strong> &#8212; acute, highly contagious respiratory disease.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical signs: high fever, cough<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: rest and care if no complications appear. Restricted exercises<\/li>\n<li>Prevention: annual vaccination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>EEE &#8212; Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis<\/strong> (sleeping sickness), the virus has three strains, Eastern, Western and Venezuelan.\u00a0 Eastern occurs more often and currently has the highest mortality rate. Transmitted via mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical signs: fever, depression, diarrhea, drowsy appearance, self mutilation, hyper-excitability, refuses to eat or drink, incoordination, head pressing, paralysis<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: supportive care, mortality rate is high.<\/li>\n<li>Prevention: annual vaccine before mosquito season and mosquito control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tetanus<\/strong> &#8212; \u201clockjaw,\u201d serious disease of the central nervous system. High mortality rate.
