Unlike a demonstration, <strong>the work is not performed before your eyes and there is not a finished product as a result of the presentation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlike the 4-H Demonstration, there are no limits or specific criteria for visual aids which may include posters, objects, slideshows, costumes, handouts, PowerPoint presentations and more. Please review the\u00a0<em>Visuals<\/em> section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/4h\/public-speaking\/guidelines-evaluation-sheets\/\">General Guidelines<\/a> for examples.<\/p>\n<p>Timing a 4-H illustrated talk begins when you introduce yourself and your topic. It stops at the end of the summary. The question section of the demonstration or illustrated talk is not considered part of the presentation for timing purposes. <strong>When choosing a topic, be sure your presentation can be seen from a distance of 15 feet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cue cards are allowed, but, if used, youth are encouraged to refer to them as little as possible.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Introduce Yourself<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Give your name, 4-H age, years in 4-H and 4-H club or group to which you belong:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cHi, my name is Louis Howe, I am 13 years old, I have been in 4-H for 6 years, and I am part of the Happy Feet Club.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Introduce Your Topic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Catch your audience\u2019s interest and then give your topic title:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cHave you ever wondered what it would be like to fall from a plane? Well, today I\u2019m going to tell you about my exciting skydiving adventures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Optional Variation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As an alternative, you can give your catchy introduction, introduce yourself, and then give your topic title.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cHave you ever wondered what it would be like to fall from a plane? Hi, my name is Louis Howe, I am 13 years old, I have been in 4-H for 6 years, and I am part of the Happy Feet Club. Today I\u2019m going to tell you about my exciting skydiving adventures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Capture your audience\u2019s interest by telling them a little bit about what you will be talking about. In this section of the talk, you are giving a sneak peek at the main part of your talk. You are telling what you will be talking about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Connection to 4-H<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect your 4-H experience to your presentation: How have you used your head, heart, hands, and\/or health? What are your future goals connected to the topic? This is a personal statement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cDuring my 4-H experience, I&#8217;ve learned a lot about personal safety. This was very important during my skydiving experience.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong>or<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cI now want to me a skydiving instructor. Through 4-H, I have gained skills in communicating with others. This will be helpful when making sure everyone is aware of safety instructions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Body<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Now you get to share what you know about your topic with your audience. This is the main section of your talk and is the \u201cmeat\u201d of the presentation. Be sure to show your enthusiasm for your topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Finally, wrap up your talk by summarizing what you have shared.\u00a0 Here is where you go back over the key points of your talk and share a concluding sentence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cToday I shared my experience with skydiving. If you ever go skydiving, the most important thing to remember is&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now you&#8217;re all equipped with the knowledge and skills to take your first plunge!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ask for Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Now you get to answer any questions your audience may have. This is where you really get to show what you know and be honest about what you don\u2019t know as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">First, ask for questions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cAre there any questions?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Once asked a question, repeat it so that all may hear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cThe question was can you go skydiving on cloudy days.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Now answer the question to the best of your ability:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cIt was always clear when I went skydiving, so this might be the case, but I don\u2019t know for sure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">When there seems to be no more questions, make sure:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cAre there any more questions?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">And now for the conclusion, and don\u2019t forget to THANK your audience for their attention:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cIf there are no more questions, that concludes my presentation.\u00a0 Thank you!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>And now you know how to do an illustrated talk the 4-H way!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><sup>Updated 1.7.26<\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a 4-H illustrated talk, you give information about a subject and use visuals to explain the subject.
