{"id":333,"date":"2012-09-07T08:47:41","date_gmt":"2012-09-07T12:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agrability\/?page_id=333"},"modified":"2021-10-05T11:07:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T15:07:07","slug":"farm-safety","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agrability\/farm-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Farm Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Agriculture is one of the most dangerous occupations in the country. \u201cThe National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH 2013) estimates that on average 243 agricultural workers suffer lost-work-time injuries each day, with five percent of those injuries resulting in permanent impairment.\u201d<\/span><\/span> Many farm fatalities and injuries can be prevented.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers perform chores, which pose threats to their health and safety. They are repeatedly exposed to noise, chemicals, dust, mold and the risk of physical injuries.\u00a0 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has been proven to prevent injury and promote farmer&#8217;s health. Improving availability of PPE and encouraging proper use could reduce the risk of injury and illness.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agriculture\/farm-safety\/tractor-safety-video-training-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tractor Safety Video Training Series from UMaine Cooperative Extension<\/a>.\u00a0 This <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7792\" src=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agriculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2017\/03\/tractor-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Farmer on tractor\" width=\"182\" height=\"121\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agriculture\/farm-safety\/tractor-safety-video-training-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video series<\/a> is designed for training farm crews, training young family members who are around farm equipment, and for self-learning for new and experienced tractor operators. With injury rates highest among children age 15 and under, farmers and farm families need to be aware of the dangers for children.
