Soil Health Course

Learn how to improve soil health on your farm!

This 5-week course is designed for farmers who want to improve their understanding of soil health science, principles, and practical management strategies. Agricultural advisors also are welcome.

2022 Course Information

The 2022 Soil Health Course will be offered virtually, starting the week of February 14 and ending March 25 (with a one-week break in the middle).

Topics include:

  • Soil biology and soil organic matter
  • Physical and chemical properties of soil health
  • Soil health strategies and practices
    • Cover cropping
    • Reduced tillage
    • Crop rotation
    • Soil amendments (ex. manure, compost, biochar)
  • Testing for soil health
  • Making a soil health plan
  • and more!

Registration and fees

  • To register, click HERE.
  • Registration deadline February 6, but register early because the class size is limited!
  • Sliding scale fee – $60/$90/$120. We are offering a sliding fee schedule to make our course accessible to all. When you register, you will be asked to select a fee level that reflects your ability to pay
  • Registration includes one free soil health test ($60 value) for those who agree to provide feedback on the course.

Course components:

  • Weekly homework (2-3 hours) including short videos, articles, and online tools
    • to be completed independently
    • made available via the Brightspace learning platform (assistance with using this platform will be available)
  • Weekly 1.5-hour Zoom sessions on Wednesdays, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
    • to include guest speakers and lots of discussion

Digital Connectivity Options: If you have limited access to reliable internet or an internet connected device:

  • To complete coursework: you may contact your local Extension office to schedule a time to use their WiFi during office hours (in the building) or use WiFi anytime from the parking lot.
  • Contact the National Digital Equity Center for no cost or low cost tablets for Maine Residents who are of low to moderate income.
