New Farmers.gov Feature Helps Producers Find Farm Loans that Fit Their Operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A new online tool can help farmers and ranchers find information on U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) farm loans that may best fit their operations. USDA has launched the new Farm Loan Discovery Tool<\/em> as the newest feature on farmers.gov, the Department\u2019s self-service website for farmers.\u00a0 For more information, please visit the FSA website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Climate Impacts on Maine Wild Blueberry Farms: Interview with David Yarborough, PhD<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To better understand the impacts of climate change on blueberry farms, we asked UMaine Cooperative Extension\u2019s David Yarborough* to reflect on his 40 years of experience advising Maine growers.<\/p>\n

David has noticed changes in weather patterns during his career, including \u201cboth an earlier spring and a later fall\u201d leading to a longer growing season, \u201cmore erratic frosts and freezes,\u201d and the drought-inducing combination of \u201chigher summer temperatures and less summer precipitation.\u201d David suggests that emerging management issues related to these changes include the need for irrigation in crop fields, and new diseases and insect pests that can impact blueberry yields. Additionally, in relation to human health he notes that \u201cticks have also spread into wild blueberry fields and diseases they vector such as Lyme can cause serious diseases.\u201d You can read David\u2019s full interview at:\u00a0https:\/\/umaine.edu\/climate-ag\/projects\/specialist-interview-with-david-yarborough\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There will be a presentation on reducing stress in cattle by Colt Knight, UMaine Extension livestock specialist.\u00a0 Also, A live demonstration of Shaw Road Farm\u2019s practices of separating three beef animals from a herd of approximately 50.<\/p>\n

The Cooksons, will discuss how they have changed their practices to more effectively reduce the long term and immediate stress on the herd.\u00a0 A pasture walk will feature Shaw Road Farm\u2019s mob grazing pasture management system and water delivery system.<\/p>\n
