4-H @ UMaine<\/strong><\/p>\n

June began with a terrific weekend at 4-H@UMaine where I(Mari) was able to bring four of our middle school 4-Hers.\u00a0 These young ladies liked their first campus experience with the dining halls, dorm rooms, and rec center. What they really loved was the mini classes that they were able to take in forestry, microbiology, library science, and horticulture.\u00a0 As you can see, we had a great time with the key note speaker \u2013 our girls thought it was awesome<\/b> that the new dean, Dr. Hannah Carter,\u00a0 used to be in Aroostook 4-H!<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Carroll\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

We would like to introduce Elizabeth Carroll, who is our new 4-H Community Education Assistant.\u00a0 Elizabeth started on June 17th and is already a great part of the Houlton Extension team.\u00a0 Elizabeth comes to us bringing experience as a Park Ranger with the United States Army Corps of Engineers and as a previous Delaware State Parks nature center employee. She has an educational background that includes a Bachelor\u2019s of Science in Agriculture and Natural Resources from the University of Delaware and continued education in Wetland Delineation and Computer Aided Drafting.<\/p>\n

The Northern Maine fair was a huge success and the Aroostook County Cooperative Extension staff would like to extend a much deserved \u201cthank you\u201d to the Leaders and families in their show of support to the 4-H youth and 4-H program. The community is one we are proud to serve and our 4-H members perform a vital role in being stewards to their community.<\/p>\n

Highlights!<\/p>\n

The Northern Maine Fair proved to be a wonderful opportunity for our 4-H youth to show off their past year\u2019s hard work in a variety of different shows.<\/p>\n

Friday the fair kicked off with a stockpile of horse show<\/strong> classes underneath blue skies and warm sunshine. A big congratulations is extended to all participants and those involved for their hard work and we cannot say enough how appreciative we are for the hard work and pride that all the members took in preparing themselves for the shows and in their care of their beloved hoofed participants.<\/p>\n

\"2<\/p>\n

The Paca Pals<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"alpacas\u00a0 had a fun morning showing their fuzzy friends around the show ring in the Alpaca Show. Show judge Desiree Foster was a wonderful resource and provided advice, support, and insight to this active 4-H group out of Hodgdon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"cloverWe had a great Obstacle Course and Clinic for upcoming Cloverbuds and potential 4-H members – a huge Thank you to Megan Smith for her assistance and to Alivia for her help with the Cloverbud crowd. It was an excellent opportunity for youth to come out and have a hands on experience with sheep. Thank you to those who allowed us to \u2018borrow\u2019 their animals for this clinic, we appreciate your input as well as your passion for this program.<\/p>\n

With the Grand Champion and Reserve named, the Baby Beef Show came to a handshaking and proud close. With the final cut from the Judge, the Baby Beef Show was decided and Jasmine Langley\u2019s steer, \u201cDel\u201d Monico, and Reid Margeson\u2019s steer, Grizz, would carry the competition.\u00a0 Pictures to come in our next newsletter along with other show results.<\/p>\n

We would like to extend a HUGE \u2018Congratulations<\/strong>\u2019 to all the outstanding participants in their display of showmanship as well as the camaraderie among the 4-H friends and members. This years Northern Maine Fair was a huge success and would not have been possible without the Leaders and families gathering to support the 4-H youth, and therefore we again owe everyone who made it possible a big “Thank You!\u201d<\/p>\n

In upcoming 4-H news the summer is quickly coming to a close, and YES we know it is only July but this summer has gone by so quickly with the Northern Maine Fair\u2019s early dates that we are left with a remainder of July and August to enjoy other great events that will be occurring. We hope that each of you will be able to join us for some wonderful gatherings and we want to extend an invitation to everyone to join in on any upcoming 4-H events across the county and state.<\/p>\n
