Dr. Lily Calderwood, Extension Wild Blueberry Specialist and Assistant Professor of Horticulture at the University of Maine, joined Kevin Chap of the PBS travel series “Wild Foods” in the summer of 2024. In “Wild Foods”, Chap travels across the country to interview foragers, farmers, and field experts working to preserve the connection between the natural world and our food systems. Dr. Calderwood shared information about the unique ecology and rich cultural history behind Maine’s wild blueberry industry.
Along with Dr. Calderwood, Chap also spoke with Darren Paul of the Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Company, who shared the history of the Passamaquoddy’s stewardship of wild blueberry barrens and the traditional harvesting practices that continue today. Also interviewed was Michael Terrein of Bluet Wines, a Maine company that produces sparkling blueberry wine made from 100% wild blueberries.
