Keeping the Spirit of Maine’s Wild Blueberry Harvest Alive

Kate Olson made the journey to Down East Maine last year to interview Wabanaki and migrant wild blueberry harvesters, as well as University of Maine Wild Blueberry Extension Specialist Dr. Lily Calderwood. Olson learned firsthand about the enduring traditions of Wabanaki wild blueberry harvesting and the challenges a changing climate will continue to present on the industry. Dr. Calderwood emphasized the need for the continued development of tools to help farmers better prepare for new climate norms like increased precipitation, warmer weather, and sudden frosts.
