Organic Blueberry Meeting
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is sponsoring an organic wild blueberry meeting on Tuesday, July 7th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be hosted by Mark Scarano at his home and organic wild blueberry Farm, Blue-Zee, in Penobscot, Maine. Mark’s home and farm are located at 652 Front Ridge Road. Take Route 15 south toward Blue Hill from Route 1 in Orland (at the junction is a Big Apple gas station), go 6.5 miles south on Route 15. When you see the Horsepower Farm on the right, Mark’s farm is approximately 1/2 mile from the Horsepower Farm on the left-hand side of the road – look for his sign “Blue-Zee Farm”. This is an opportunity to get a review on insects, weed diseases and fertilizer updates from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and University researchers and to network with your fellow organic wild blueberry growers.
Integrated Crop Management Field Training Sessions
The third field training session will take place on June 30th in Warren, July 1st in Jonesboro, and July 2nd in Orland at 6:00 p.m. (see May Newsletter for details). We will cover blueberry maggot fly trapping, SWD identification, trapping and control, a discussion of diseases we had this year, leaf and soil sampling, and weed identification and post emergence weed management. One recertification credit per session will be offered for certified pesticide applicators.
Wild Blueberry Annual Field Day
The annual summer field day for wild blueberry growers will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Blueberry Hill Farm on Route 1 in Jonesboro. The meeting will begin with an expanded vendor presence at 9:00 a.m. The discussion with blueberry growers, processors, and University and government employees affiliated with the blueberry industry on this year’s wild blueberry crop will begin at 10:00 a.m. The remainder of the program will provide updates on current issues and research projects. This year will feature a talk by Ivan Fernandez on Maine’s Climate Future 2015: Our Climate and Why It Matters, a talk on Growing Season Effects on Wild Blueberry in Maine and Implications for Management by David Yarborough and a talk on Blueberry Crop Insurance: Options & Updates by Erin Roche, as well as many other presentations (see enclosed agenda). Two recertification credits will be offered for certified pesticide applicators attending this session.
