perennial<\/p>\n<p>-primrose family<\/p>\n<p>-spreads by creeping rhizomes<\/p>\n<p>-leaves are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>simple<\/li>\n<li>whorled<\/li>\n<li>entire to finely toothed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211; typically has 7 petals, but can range 5-10<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; generally flowers spring to mid-June in ME<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; generally fruits June to August in ME<\/p>\n<p><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-deciduous and coniferous forests<\/p>\n<p>-shaded moist woods<\/p>\n<p>-successional old fields<\/p>\n<p>-also can thrive in dry, sandy, acidic soils<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agriculture:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-pollinated by native bees<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural History:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-its Latin name means &#8220;one third of a foot&#8221;
