Junior Maine Guide–4 Weeks (Ages 15-18)

Four Weeks. Two Outdoor Expeditions. One Extraordinary Challenge.
Since 2001, Bryant Pond has offered the Junior Maine Guide (JMG) program to young outdoor enthusiasts ready to challenge themselves, expand their wilderness skills, and work toward one of Maine’s most respected youth outdoor achievements.
As the highest level of our Woodscraft Path, JMG is an intensive four-week experience combining traditional Maine woods skills, outdoor adventure, leadership, and teamwork.
Unlike programs that incorporate Junior Maine Guide training into a traditional summer camp schedule, Bryant Pond’s JMG participants spend three weeks immersed in skill development and outdoor experiences, including a paddling trip and a hiking expedition. Their journey concludes with a week at the statewide Junior Maine Guide testing encampment, where candidates have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and earn the distinguished JMG patch.
It’s a demanding experience that requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to learn. But it’s also four weeks of adventure, shared accomplishments, and friendships that often last long after camp ends.
Many Paths Lead to Junior Maine Guide
At Bryant Pond, outdoor learning is part of the adventure. From a camper’s first experience exploring the woods to more challenging outdoor programs as they grow, each summer offers opportunities to discover new interests, build confidence, and develop practical skills—all while having fun.
Whether campers are learning to paddle a canoe, build a campfire, identify trees and wildlife, or navigate a woodland trail, they’re gaining knowledge through hands-on experiences that feel more like adventure than a classroom.
Our programs naturally complement one another, allowing returning campers to build upon skills and experiences they’ve gained over the years. For those who eventually choose to pursue Junior Maine Guide, these adventures can provide a valuable foundation.
But you don’t have to grow up at Bryant Pond to become a Junior Maine Guide.
Our intensive four-week JMG program provides focused instruction, hands-on practice, and real-world outdoor experiences designed to prepare participants for the statewide testing encampment. We’ve welcomed teens who joined Bryant Pond specifically for JMG, and many have successfully earned their Junior Maine Guide designation.
Whether a camper has spent years exploring the Maine woods with us or is joining Bryant Pond for the first time, JMG offers an opportunity to challenge themselves, develop their abilities, and work toward an extraordinary achievement.
Mastering the Skills of the Maine Woods
Becoming a Junior Maine Guide requires more than knowing how to camp. Candidates must develop a broad understanding of outdoor living, demonstrate practical skills, and learn to make thoughtful decisions in a wilderness environment.
Throughout their training, participants build knowledge and experience in areas such as:
- Canoeing: Paddling techniques, canoe handling, and water safety
- Axemanship: Safe and responsible use of traditional woods tools
- Fire & Shelter Building: Constructing fires and shelters using appropriate materials and techniques
- Navigation: Map and compass skills, topographic maps, and Maine geography
- Outdoor Cooking: Meal preparation, camp cooking, and safe food handling.
- Trip Planning & Equipment: Preparing for outdoor travel and managing campsite responsibilities
- First Aid: Understanding and responding to common outdoor emergencies
- Natural History: Identifying Maine trees, wildlife, and other features of the natural environment
- Outdoor Ethics: Leave No Trace principles, environmental stewardship, and wilderness regulations
Through instruction, practice, and hands-on challenges, campers strengthen their abilities and prepare to demonstrate their skills at the statewide testing encampment.
Learning Through Adventure — On the Water and on the Trail
One of the defining features of Bryant Pond’s JMG program is the opportunity to put developing skills into practice during extended outdoor trips.
Participants take an active role in planning and preparing for both a paddling trip and a hiking expedition. From organizing equipment and planning meals to navigating routes and managing camp responsibilities, these experiences bring their training into the real world.
On the water, campers apply their canoeing, navigation, and group travel skills. On the trail, they draw upon their knowledge of hiking, outdoor living, and working together in a wilderness setting.
These trips are more than adventures. They offer opportunities to build independence, make decisions, solve problems, and discover what can be accomplished through preparation, perseverance, and teamwork.
The Final Challenge — Statewide JMG Testing Encampment
The fourth and final week brings participants to the statewide Junior Maine Guide testing encampment, where candidates from participating Maine summer camps gather to demonstrate their outdoor knowledge and skills.
Throughout the encampment, candidates are evaluated in a variety of practical and knowledge-based areas, including canoeing, navigation, shelter and fire construction, outdoor cooking, first aid, and traditional woods skills.
Earning the Junior Maine Guide designation is a significant accomplishment. Candidates must successfully meet the required standards; participation in Bryant Pond’s four-week program does not automatically guarantee the award.
Regardless of the final testing outcome, participants leave with valuable outdoor experience, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of their own abilities.

Four Weeks That Build Lasting Connections
There’s something special about spending nearly a month working toward a common goal.
Throughout the JMG experience, participants learn to depend on one another, celebrate progress, work through challenges, and contribute their individual strengths to the group.
The shared experiences of camp life, outdoor expeditions, and testing encampment create strong bonds. Many of our JMG participants develop lasting friendships, and some return to Bryant Pond in future years as members of our camp staff.
For teens who love the Maine woods and are ready to take their outdoor skills to the next level, Junior Maine Guide offers an unforgettable challenge.
