Discover Maine’s outdoor traditions. Build skills. Begin your adventure.

Junior Maine Woodscraft introduces young campers to the traditional outdoor skills and experiences that have long been part of Maine’s woods heritage. Through hands-on learning, campers develop confidence, independence, and an appreciation for living and exploring in the outdoors.

The adventure begins at one of Bryant Pond’s woodland campsites, where campers set up their tents and make the woods their home for the week. Throughout the week, they’ll learn to cook outdoors, develop practical woods skills, explore the surrounding forests and waterways, and discover the rewards of working together as a small camp community.

Learning the Skills of the Maine Woods

Junior Maine Woodscraft combines traditional outdoor skills with the excitement of a week spent living and learning in the woods.

Throughout the week, experiences include:

  • Setting up and maintaining a campsite
  • Wilderness cooking over an open fire
  • Fire-building and outdoor safety
  • Traditional woods skills and tool use
  • Canoeing and introductory canoe travel skills
  • Hiking and exploring the surrounding forests
  • Outdoor preparedness and resourcefulness
  • Teamwork, responsibility, and camp community living

Campers take an active role in daily campsite life, developing practical skills while learning to work together, solve problems, and become more comfortable and confident in the outdoors.

And because this is summer camp, there’s also plenty of time to enjoy the water, cool off with a swim, and experience the natural beauty surrounding Bryant Pond.

The Beginning of the Junior Maine Guide Path

Junior Maine Woodscraft introduces campers to many of the traditional skills and outdoor experiences that form the foundation of Bryant Pond’s Junior Maine Guide pathway.

At the end of the week, each camper receives a Junior Maine Woodscraft patch, recognizing their participation and accomplishments during the program.

For some campers, this experience sparks an interest in continuing along the Maine Woodscraft pathway and eventually taking on the challenge of the Junior Maine Guide program. For others, it’s simply a memorable week of outdoor adventure, new friendships, and discovering skills they can enjoy for years to come.

Both are part of what makes Junior Maine Woodscraft a rewarding experience.
