A Legacy of Conservation, Education, and Generosity<\/h2>\n

Bryant Pond’s story began with an extraordinary act of generosity.<\/p>\n

In 1955, Lillian Rogers Waterhouse donated her family’s lakeside estate on the shores of Lake Christopher with a simple but enduring vision: that the property would always serve young people through conservation and outdoor education. More than seventy years later, that vision continues to shape everything that happens at Bryant Pond.<\/p>\n

From its beginnings as a conservation education school for teachers and students to its evolution as the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, generations of young people have learned to paddle a canoe, build a campfire, identify wildlife, explore forests, and develop a lifelong appreciation for Maine’s natural resources.<\/p>\n

The history that follows was researched and compiled by Bryant Pond Learning Center Board member Carolyn Hardy using original deeds, newspaper accounts, historical records, and institutional documents. It tells the story of the people, partnerships, and community spirit that transformed one family’s gift into a lasting educational legacy.<\/p>\n

Bryant Pond Through the Years<\/h2>\n

1955<\/h3>\n

Lillian Rogers Waterhouse donates her approximately 60-acre summer estate on Lake Christopher, establishing the foundation for a future conservation education center.<\/p>\n

1957<\/h3>\n

The Conservation Education Foundation of Maine is formed, and the first teacher workshops are held on the property.<\/p>\n

1960<\/h3>\n

Rogers Hall is completed and dedicated by Governor John H. Reed in honor of Mrs. Waterhouse and her remarkable gift.<\/p>\n

The 1960s<\/h3>\n

The program expands beyond teacher education to welcome school groups and young people from across Maine.<\/p>\n

The 1970s<\/h3>\n

Despite significant financial challenges and the loss of state funding, the school perseveres through community support and dedication to its mission.<\/p>\n

The Years That Followed<\/h3>\n

Bryant Pond continues to evolve, eventually becoming part of the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Centers while expanding opportunities for youth and families throughout the state.<\/p>\n

Thousands of youth and adults continue to experience conservation, outdoor adventure, and experiential learning at Bryant Pond each year.<\/p>\n

A Living Legacy<\/h2>\n

Many of the places described in this history remain central to the Bryant Pond experience today.<\/p>\n

The stone house overlooking Lake Christopher still stands and is known as Cranstone. Rogers Hall, dedicated in 1960 in honor of Lillian Rogers Waterhouse, continues to serve campers and visitors as the campus dining hall. The forests, fields, and waterfront continue to provide places where young people build confidence, develop leadership skills, and connect with the natural world.<\/p>\n

While the campus has grown and adapted over the decades, its purpose remains remarkably true to the vision established in 1955. Every camper who learns to paddle a canoe, identify a bird, hike a trail, or discover a passion for the outdoors becomes part of a story that began with one family’s extraordinary act of generosity and a community’s commitment to conservation education.<\/p>\n

More than seventy years later, Bryant Pond continues to honor Lillian Rogers Waterhouse’s vision by connecting new generations of young people with Maine’s outdoors through conservation, education, and experiential learning.<\/p>\n
