{"id":5379,"date":"2019-01-23T19:36:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-23T19:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/cranberries\/?page_id=5379"},"modified":"2019-01-30T18:12:02","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T18:12:02","slug":"viruses-in-cranberry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/cranberries\/grower-services\/diseases\/viruses-in-cranberry\/","title":{"rendered":"Viruses in Cranberry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Year 2018 Information about Tobacco Streak Virus (TSV) and Blueberry Shock Virus (BlShV) which have been found in cranberries in Massachusetts and Wisconsin (we are being watchful in Maine):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both TSV and BlShV manifest themselves by deep grooves on the berries (similar to Bravo\u00ae injury and sometimes to hail damage as well).<\/li>\n<li>Both are very spotty on a bed (nobody has seen them on a whole bog as yet).<\/li>\n<li>TSV affects berries that are on the same runner, and nearly always it\u2019s every berry on every upright coming from the infected runner (suggests that TSV is a systemic type of infection). This \u2018is\u2019 the case for BlShV.<\/li>\n<li>Flower and tip blighting are also observed sometimes on TSV-infected uprights (less common than the berry scarring).<\/li>\n<li>Both TSV and BlShV overwinter and persist in the vines from year to year.<\/li>\n<li>The cranberry plants recover from both TSV and BlShV by the time berries are formed in the <strong>subsequent season<\/strong> after being infected (<strong>no visual symptoms or observed negative side effects<\/strong> but the virus is still in them).<\/li>\n<li>TSV is spread (probably) by thrips (thrips <em>do<\/em> spread it in other crops), and possibly by way of pollinators carrying the infected pollen around.<\/li>\n<li>BlShV is spread by seeds and has been found in seedlings that grow from infected seeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BlShV has <em>not<\/em> been detected in lowbush blueberry as yet.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Most of the BlShV infections have been found in mature beds of \u2018Stevens\u2019 (and some in Mullica Queen, Norman LeMunyon, and Pilgrim).<\/li>\n<li>No cure, currently, for the viruses.<\/li>\n<li>Scout for signs of the virus by looking for prematurely red berries during <em>early<\/em> fruit set, although cranberry fruitworm will cause that as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional\/Detailed Information (with photos):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/learningstore.uwex.edu\/Assets\/pdfs\/A4147.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blueberry Shock Virus in Cranberry (pdf)<\/a> (Univ. of Wisconsin-Extension)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fruit.webhosting.cals.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2017\/02\/Tobacco-Streak-Virus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tobacco Streak Virus in Cranberry (pdf)<\/a> (Univ. of Wisconsin-Extension)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ag.umass.edu\/sites\/ag.umass.edu\/files\/fact-sheets\/pdf\/fruit_scars_caused_by_viruses.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fruit Scars Caused by Viruses (pdf)<\/a> (UMass)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Year 2018 Information about Tobacco Streak Virus (TSV) and Blueberry Shock Virus (BlShV) which have been found in cranberries in Massachusetts and Wisconsin (we are being watchful in Maine): Both TSV and BlShV manifest themselves by deep grooves on the berries (similar to Bravo\u00ae injury and sometimes to hail damage as well).
