IPM is integrated because it brings together, or integrates, a range of biological, organic, cultural, mechanical, and chemical options for pest problems.\u201d \u2013 definition from the <strong>Northeastern IPM Center<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastipm.org\/ipm-in-action\/what-is-ipm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.northeastipm.org\/ipm-in-action\/what-is-ipm\/<\/a> [as of April, 2020]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slide 4: Some IPM History: (<\/strong>Primary Source: M. Frazier at Penn State Extension; IPM in the Classroom 1997) <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/pests\/ipm\/schools-childcare\/schools\/educators\/curriculum\/contents\/shorthistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/pests\/ipm\/schools-childcare\/schools\/educators\/curriculum\/contents\/shorthistory<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1962:<\/strong> Rachel Carson publishes her book Silent Spring, documenting the detrimental effects on the environment\u2014especially on birds\u2014of the indiscriminate use of pesticides, and it brings the issue of pesticide safety to the attention of the public:\n<ul>\n<li>People start questioning and examining: what are the adverse effects on wildlife, water quality, and human health?<\/li>\n<li>DDT is found in milk and food<\/li>\n<li>Resistance of pests to pesticides becomes a problem<\/li>\n<li>Response to the book eventually results in public policy changes during the 1970s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>1970s:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Significant research undertaken on the topic of IPM approaches to pest control<\/li>\n<li>USDA creates nationwide IPM programs at the Land Grant universities<\/li>\n<li>EPA is created and is given jurisdiction over pesticide registration &amp; regulation<\/li>\n<li>EPA institutes pesticide education programs in the Land Grant universities (such as UMaine Orono)<\/li>\n<li>Maine Pesticide Control Act of 1975 (Title 7, Sections 601\u2013625) gives authority to the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) to regulate pesticides in Maine (one of two statutes that gives this authority) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dacf\/php\/pesticides\/laws.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dacf\/php\/pesticides\/laws.shtml<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 5: Maine\u2019s Current IPM Policy: <\/strong>STATE POLICY; PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INITIATIVES TO MINIMIZE RELIANCE ON PESTICIDES (MRSA 22 \u00a71471-X)<br \/>\n&#8220;It is the policy of the State to work to find ways to use the minimum amount of pesticides needed to effectively control targeted pests in all areas of application. The agencies of the State involved in the regulation or use of pesticides shall promote the principles and the implementation of integrated pest management and other science-based technology to minimize reliance on pesticides while recognizing that outbreaks of disease, insects and other pests will necessitate fluctuations in pesticide use. These agencies, in cooperation with private interest groups, shall work to educate pesticide users and the general public in the proper use of pesticides and to determine other actions needed to accomplish the state policy.\u201d &#8212; as of October, 2016. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dacf\/php\/pesticides\/laws.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dacf\/php\/pesticides\/laws.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slide 6: Core Components of Cranberry IPM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pest Monitoring and Correct Pest Identification:<\/strong> Monitoring involves mainly visual monitoring (on hands and knees in some cases) as well as the frequent use of a 12\u201d-diameter sweep net<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insect Pest Action Thresholds (AT):<\/strong> Rather than relying on the calendar or one\u2019s intuition to dictate when a spray should be applied, one should check to see what, if anything, is present (once or twice per week during the pest season), and any actions against a given pest should be based on the action threshold (AT) for that pest (given as an average per 25 sweeps with a 12\u201d-diameter net). Past history (lessons learned) with the pest should also be considered in the decision-making process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weed ID, Priority Determinations and \u2018Weed Mapping\u2019:<\/strong> Low or High priority weed designations are based on three factors: 1) its ability to spread, 2) its ability to reduce yield, and 3) its susceptibility to control measures. Making a map of one\u2019s weed locations and density, etc. is also advised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For managing fruit rot (Bloom Stage &amp; the Keeping Quality Forecast):<\/strong> The plant stage (specifically, the percentage of open bloom) is used in the timing of any sprays for managing rot. The Keeping Quality Forecast is a yearly prediction of rot pressure that draws on the fact that there is a strong relationship between certain weather factors (mainly temperature, precipitation, and sunshine hours) and the expected quality of the fruit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural Control Practices:<\/strong> Examples include seasonal and de-trash floods, pruning, sanding, mowing and burning of weeds, etc. Flooding is usually the most effective cultural control practice that cranberry growers can employ, especially against insects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 7: Cranberry Weed IPM<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cranberries are perennials, so <strong>most of the weed species are also perennials<\/strong>\u2014plants that live for many years and produce flowers and seeds year after year. [Drawing a \u201cWeed Map\u201d is thus encouraged in order to track these weeds from year to year; is that weed problem getting worse, or declining?]<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eradication versus tolerance:<\/strong> In cranberry, weed eradication is considered an unreasonable goal, so the presence of many weed populations is often tolerated \u2013 but, all weeds are <em>not<\/em> created equal! [Some weeds compete with cranberry significantly but many others are really only a nuisance and can therefore be safely tolerated.]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 8: Cranberry Weed IPM Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early preventative measures<\/strong> (for example, hand-weeding after planting so weeds cannot gain a foothold; adequate planting density, maintaining a low\/acidic pH, mowing dikes, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weed Identification<\/strong>, followed by:\n<ul>\n<li>Prioritization (Deal first with the weeds known to be most worrisome or most destructive; lowest priority ones can perhaps be tolerated)<\/li>\n<li>Weed Mapping (in order to monitor challenging or problem areas and gauge any control efforts from year to year)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre and post-emergence herbicides<\/strong> (if needed)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural Practices<\/strong> (examples include \u2018Late Water\u2019 flood, pruning, sanding, mowing and burning of weeds)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biological:<\/strong> no viable choices currently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 9: All weeds are <em>not<\/em> created equal! <\/strong>Massachusetts developed a priority system in 1995 \u2013 Weeds are put into any of four groups based on three factors: ability to spread, ability to reduce yield, and susceptibility to control measures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Priority 1 weeds are considered to pose the greatest threat to cranberry farming<\/strong> (most likely with regards to cranberry yield in particular)!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority 2<\/strong> (Serious Weeds)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority 3<\/strong> (Weeds of less importance)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Priority 4<\/strong> (Weeds of little concern)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 10: Cranberry Weed Priorities (bad ones) &#8212; Except for dodder and \u2018some\u2019 asters, these are all perennial plants:<br \/>\nPriority 1 (Very Damaging Weeds):<\/strong> Dewberries, Dodder, Poison ivy, Sawbrier and Wild bean (groundnut).<br \/>\n<strong>Priority 2 (Serious Weeds):<\/strong> Asters, Common sawbrier, Narrow-leaved goldenrod, Upright bramble, Yellow loosestrife <em>(Callisto\u00ae herbicide has helped to turn the tide against this weed in Maine).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slide 11: Picture of <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/cranberries\/grower-services\/weeds\/dodder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dodder<\/a> with the following information included with the photo:\u00a0 <\/strong>Dodder is an especially bad \u201cPriority 1\u201d weed but luckily it has been very rare on our Maine cranberry plantings! The host plant receives no benefit from the dodder and the dodder plant requires a host plant to survive. It is referred to as an &#8220;obligate parasitic weed.&#8221;<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slide 12: Cranberry Weed Priorities (lower priority ones):<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Priority 3 (Weeds of less importance):<\/strong> Black chokeberry, Nutsedge, Leatherleaf (woody, evergreen shrub), Perennial sedges and grasses, Red maple, Rushes (<em>Juncus<\/em> sp.), Sheep laurel and White clover.<br \/>\n<strong>Priority 4 (Weeds of little concern):<\/strong> annual broadleaves such as ragweed and smartweed, annual sedges and grasses, Fireweed, ferns, Hardhack, Horsetail, Joe Pye Weed, Meadow beauty, Meadowsweet, mosses, Pitchfork, Sheep sorrel, Sweet pepper bush and White violet <em>[<strong>Year 2020 Update from Charlie:<\/strong> Massachusetts has found that <strong>mosses<\/strong> are much more damaging to cranberry yields than previously believed, so they would more likely be considered a Priority 2 weed presently or at least a Priority 3 weed].<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slide 13: 2008 Maine Cranberry Grower Survey Findings<\/strong> (Weeds listed by the growers as the hardest to control, and not surprisingly, also the most abundant from year to year): Yellow loosestrife and goldenrod (Priority 2), clover and small trees (Priority 3), and Priority 4 weeds listed were: Horsetail, cattails, ragweed and grasses (annual grasses are Priority 4, but perennial grasses would be Priority 3).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a group!<\/li>\n<li>Good resistance management includes alternating products that have different mode of actions, and\/or limiting or reducing the total number of applications per season of the same herbicide or herbicides having the same \u201cResistance Management Grouping\u201d number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slides 17 and 18: Cranberry Insect IPM<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Correct ID is essential!<\/li>\n<li>About 24 insects and 1 mite are known to be of <strong>economic importance<\/strong> in cranberry.<\/li>\n<li>When scouting\/searching for pests, try not to be distracted or alarmed by non-pest insects.<\/li>\n<li>Probably the four most threatening\/destructive cranberry insect pests in Maine are:\n<ol>\n<li>Blackheaded Fireworm (2 to 3 generations per year)<\/li>\n<li>Cranberry Fruitworm (single generation per year)<\/li>\n<li>Cranberry Tipworm (3 to 5 generations per year)<\/li>\n<li>Cranberry Weevil (2 generations per year)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Scouting \/ Looking for pest insects:\n<ul>\n<li>Visual monitoring on hands and knees (only your hands and eyes for tools)<\/li>\n<li>Sweep net sampling (aka \u201csweeping\u201d) <strong>Note:<\/strong> <em>Both<\/em> sweeping and visual monitoring are important and both should be used!<\/li>\n<li>Sweeping (weekly, and at least until bloom):\n<ul>\n<li>Use a 12\u201d- diameter net (pest capture threshold values are based on this size net)<\/li>\n<li>One 180\u00b0arc swath with the net (in one direction) = 1 sweep<\/li>\n<li>25 sweeps = 1 sweep set<\/li>\n<li>Size of Acreage and Number of Sweep Sets Suggested:\n<ul>\n<li>1 \u2013 10 acres (one sweep set per acre)<\/li>\n<li>10 \u2013 20 acres (At least 10 sweep sets total)<\/li>\n<li>Greater than 20 acres (one sweep set per every two acres)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 19: Cranberry Insect IPM<br \/>\nTreatment<\/strong> for an insect pest should be based on scouting (and comparing counts with <strong>action thresholds<\/strong>) but should take into account other factors as well, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>crop value<\/li>\n<li>dollar cost of the action or treatment [the thresholds in cranberry are not economic thresholds but just experience-based levels at which you should be \u2018concerned\u2019]<\/li>\n<li>effects on pollinators and other beneficials<\/li>\n<li>potential water issues (if relevant)<\/li>\n<li>weather<\/li>\n<li>neighbors<\/li>\n<li>chemical resistance management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 20: Cranberry Insect IPM<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pheromone Traps<\/strong> <em>(usefulness in Maine is questionable!)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Trap captures are not paired with an action threshold level (used for <em>application timing<\/em> only); [Depending on control product to be used, either the start of significant moth flight, peak trap capture, or end of flight will be the trap information needed.]<\/li>\n<li>One trap per 10 acres; place on the upwind side of the bed; change lure every three weeks unless otherwise noted; <strong>NOTE:<\/strong> a lot of non-target (non-pest) moths are sometimes drawn to the same lures, and can clutter up or even fill up the trap surface area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behavioral Control:<\/strong> <strong>Mating Disruption<\/strong> (not widely used, so very patchy availability of products, if any!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural Control:<\/strong> primarily floods and sanding (Certain floods are often extremely effective against some of the species of cranberry insects!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slides 21, 22, 23: Cranberry Insecticides:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carbamates &amp; Organophosphates (broad spectrum)\n<ul>\n<li>Include Sevin\u00ae, Diazinon\u00ae, Orthene\u00ae and Lorsban\u00ae<\/li>\n<li>Include the conventional active ingredients used for many years that are often toxic to bees and natural enemies, and often have high human toxicity<\/li>\n<li>Target the nervous system<\/li>\n<li>Most are being reduced in usage or phased out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) e.g. Rimon\u00ae, Confirm\u00ae, Intrepid\u00ae\n<ul>\n<li>This group interferes with molting or metamorphosis<\/li>\n<li>Confirm\u00ae and Intrepid\u00ae are <strong>caterpillar-specific<\/strong> and have low human toxicity; most effective when applied multiple times and in low gallonage against small caterpillars (may take 7 or more days before they die, but they stop feeding long before they die)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Spinosyns (e.g. spinosad, spinetoram) [e.g. Delegate\u00ae, Entrust\u00ae]\n<ul>\n<li>Target the nervous system, interfering with the insect\u2019s normal functioning at the synapse, causing paralysis and death<\/li>\n<li>Work via contact and ingestion<\/li>\n<li>Low non-target impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Neonicotinoids [e.g. Actara\u00ae, Assail\u00ae, Admire\u00ae, and Alias\u00ae]\n<ul>\n<li>Targets the nervous system in a way similar to the natural insecticide, nicotine \u2013 causes excitation of the nerves, paralysis and death<\/li>\n<li>Have systemic activity in the plant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Microbial Disruptors of Midgut Membranes\n<ul>\n<li>Bacillus thuringiensis (<em>B.t.<\/em>) products that work as a stomach poison (<em>Bt<\/em> subspecies Kurstaki, or <em>Bt-k<\/em>, is toxic only to caterpillars)<\/li>\n<li>Must be eaten by the insect to have any effect<\/li>\n<li>Applications must be well-timed against small larvae, and be applied in low gallonage<\/li>\n<li>Have not been widely adopted in cranberry, largely because other reduced-risk options perform better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Slide 24: List of Cranberry Insecticides (as of 2016) <\/strong>(Visit this page for a more current listing: <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/cranberries\/grower-services\/cranberry-ipm-guide\/\" 28)<\/strong> (sustained muscle contraction \/ paralysis)\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Altacor\u00ae<\/strong> (chlorantraniliprole) &#8211; very narrow spectrum of activity; very good fit for IPM; mammalian
