SUMMARY:Insects: Maine's Oddballs\, Tricksters & Lookalikes (Zoom Presentation)
DESCRIPTION:Get answers to questions such as: can you tell the difference between a sawfly larva and a caterpillar? If you saw an eastern cicada killer would you fear you had seen a “Murder” hornet instead and think that they had arrived in Maine? Can you tell a weevil from a tick? Or a booklouse from a bed bug nymph? Fool you once … shame on them! Fool you twice\, shame on you for not attending this workshop! \nCharles (Charlie) Armstrong hails from western NY State with a bachelor’s in biology and a master’s in entomology\, the latter of which came from UMaine-Orono in 1996. He has been UMaine Extension’s cranberry guru since 1997\, helping Maine’s cranberry industry with all-things pest-related\, and beyond! For the past three years\, Charlie has also been serving as our Extension Insect Diagnostician out of the Diagnostic & Research Laboratory in Orono\, identifying not only insects\, but other critters such as mites\, spiders\, and jumping worms. He loves gardening but has never been home enough during the day to do it justice or to even attempt it as much as he would like\, so he is very much looking forward to retirement when he can finally give that a go! \nRegistration is required. The program fee is offered on a sliding scale\, $0-$10 and is free to enrolled Master Gardener Volunteers.  This session will be recorded and shared with those who register for this webinar.

Though applicable for any objective\, this approach to gardening has been shown to be particularly useful in mitigating climate anxiety. \nRegistration is required. The program fee is offered on a sliding scale\, $0-$10 and is free to enrolled Master Gardener Volunteers. This session will NOT be recorded.

SUMMARY:Be Drought Smart When Selecting Plants for your Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Drought-tolerant plants conserve water usage while still providing beauty and function in the landscape. With climate change concerns\, and more frequent occurrences of drought throughout Maine\, it makes conservation and economic sense to select drought-tolerant plants for your landscape. Many of these plants are native\, pollinator and bird friendly\, aesthetically appealing\, and able to withstand the drier soil conditions we will continue to experience. In this session you will be introduced to a variety of drought tolerant herbaceous perennials\, trees\, and shrubs that will become the stars in your landscape. \nRegistration is required. The program fee is offered on a sliding scale\, $0-$10 and is free to enrolled Master Gardener Volunteers. This session will be recorded and shared with those who register for this webinar.

SUMMARY:Interseeding Cover Crop Webinar
DESCRIPTION:July and August are ideal times for seeding cover crops over your vegetable crops. This practice\, called interseeding\,\nstabilizes soils during the growing season\, reduces weed populations\, and results in an established cover crop in place at the termination of the cash crop. \nThe UMaine Cooperative Extension and AgroEcology Lab research team\, with support from Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education\n(SARE)\, are investigating this practice. In the third year of the project\, the research is showing great potential. \nJoin our team for a lunch time virtual discussion on what has worked and what has not. We’ll discuss cover crop seeding timing\, seeding methods\, equipment\, species selection\, and more. \nThere will be plenty of time for questions. \nThere is no cost for this event. \nRegister at  Interseeding Cover Crop Webinar to receive the zoom link. \nFor more information contact Jason Lilley\, jason.lilley@maine.edu\, 207-581-8368 \n

SUMMARY:The Problem with Peat
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that peat bogs are the world’s largest natural carbon source as they store 30% of land-based carbon? One study estimated that peat bogs store three times as much carbon each year as a growing forest. Did you know that using peat in gardening is a non-sustainable practice and\, in fact\, using peat moss for horticulture has the same effects as burning fossil fuels? \nIn this presentation\, Master Gardener Volunteer\, Tom Witwicki\, will discuss this valuable resource\, the negative impacts of harvesting peat and alternatives to using peat in the garden. \nRegistration is required. The program fee is offered on a sliding scale\, $0-$10 and is free to enrolled Master Gardener Volunteers. This session will be recorded and shared with those who register for this webinar.
