Interns receive current, research-based information from Extension educators and horticulture experts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Master Gardener knows:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>how to turn leaves, grass, and kitchen scraps into garden gold \u2014 compost<\/li>\n<li>how to amend the soil and benefit the environment<\/li>\n<li>the difference between beneficial insects and pests<\/li>\n<li>how to get the most out of Maine\u2019s short growing season<\/li>\n<li>the knowledge to solve common gardening problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In return<\/strong>, trained Master Gardeners volunteer their time and expertise in many ways for community programs and activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As part of a national Cooperative Extension effort<\/strong>, Master Gardeners are recognized as well-trained practitioners who serve their communities.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><a id=\"vision\"><\/a>Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Enriching lives through learning and giving back to the community, while developing healthy bodies, minds and spirits through gardening.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Mission<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Foster sustainable gardening practices and\u00a0enrich the lives of our Master Gardener Volunteers<span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span>by educating and mentoring gardeners in the community through opportunities to learn, connect with other gardeners, and support community service projects.<\/p>\n<p>We support this mission by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>developing gardening skills and techniques within our community<\/li>\n<li>assisting in the ongoing learning and training of our MG volunteers<\/li>\n<li>mentoring those new to gardening<\/li>\n<li>applying gardening skills and support to individuals who are no longer able to garden for themselves<\/li>\n<li>contributing to food security for thousands of Maine families<\/li>\n<li>supporting and expanding the programs and sponsored projects of the Cumberland County Master Gardener Program through fundraising activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Core Values<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Stewardship \u2013 MGVs are accountable for the careful and responsible management of the environment and the programs and activities we initiate in the interest of CCMGA and the broader community<\/li>\n<li>Inclusivity\u00a0\u2013 MGVs embrace the diversity and uniqueness of all individuals<\/li>\n<li>Commitment \u2013 Through active participation, MGVs approach all programs, activities and responsibilities with a focus on delivering and exceeding expectation of ourselves and the broader community<\/li>\n<li>Positivity \u2013 MGVs possess a can-do attitude and approach to what they do<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration \u2013 MGVs seek opportunities to work with others in ways that further our mission and benefit the broader community<\/li>\n<li>Generosity \u2013 MGVs contribute their time, knowledge and skills as the means to \u2018give back\u2019 to the communities and individuals we serve<\/li>\n<li>Community \u2013 MGVs are active participants and supporters of UM Extension programs and values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information about the Cumberland County program, please contact Pamela Hargest (<a href=\"mailto:pamela.hargest@maine.edu\">pamela.hargest@maine.edu<\/a>) or 207.949.4524.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Already a Master Gardener Volunteer in Cumberland County?\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Please proceed to the page,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/cumberland\/master-gardener-volunteers-online-resource\/\">Master Gardener Volunteers Online Resource<\/a><\/strong> (password-protected)<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maine\u2019s Master Gardener Program\u00a0provides participants with at\u00a0roughly 65 hours of in-depth training in the science of horticulture.
