June Jamboree is a time for 4-H members to see what others are doing in their 4-H projects, a chance to learn new things, to see old friends and to make new ones. June Jamboree will also assist 4-H members in preparing for the Cumberland County Fair in September. 4-H club members have the opportunity to participate in many animal clinics, shows, and workshops.\u00a0 There will be workshops about Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine, and Working Steer. Lunch is available for purchase to support the Hooves \u2018N Stuff 4-H Club. The Cloverbud Pet SPIN Club will also be presenting about their pets. Information can be found on the June Jamboree page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lunch will be available for purchase including hot dogs and bake sale items. All proceeds will support the Hooves ‘N Stuff 4-H Club.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Summer of Science Seeking Teen Teachers\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

4-H Teen Teaching is a paid summer internship for teens ages 14-19 which will give you 21st Century Skills for your future. The internship is only a few hours per week during July and August so you can combine this awesome opportunity with another summer job or internship if you choose. If you take this challenge you will learn communication, leadership, perseverance, teamwork, science, teaching skills, and meet a lot of new friends.<\/p>\n

If you are selected, you will teach a science lesson to kids in 3rd-6th grade at least once a week. We will train you (you must be available for the training June 25-27) how to teach others and the subject matter. The theme for this year is Ocean Literacy and Engineering. There will be teaching sites in Portland, Westbrook, Gray, and possibly other communities. You must find transportation to your assigned teaching sites. The place where you teach depends on where you live and what transportation you have available; 4-H will assign you the closest site possible at the training in June.<\/p>\n

4-H Teen Leader Camp at Tanglewood June 23rd \u2013 28th, Only $75!

Staff members Sara Conant & Alisha Targonski, in partnership with Jess Decke at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center are excited to offer 4-H Teen Week again this year!<\/div>\n

We will be offering programming specific to being teen leaders to help improve cooperation, teamwork, and leadership skills in the mornings and regular camp programming each afternoon. Participants can attend all or just some of camp but please let us know your plans. You will need to find transportation to and from camp, if that is an issue please let Sara know and we may be able to work something out. This is open to only 12 teens, ages 13-18, so please register early to save a spot!<\/div>\n

Animal Approvals<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Anyone wishing to show animals at any 4-H shows\/events at fairs this year must have a valid Animal Approval Form. All forms must be filled out, signed by the club leader (on the line directly after the last animal listed) and signed and embossed here in the county office. 4-H\u2019ers will receive a signed and embossed copy in the mail within approximately two weeks of the form being received in our office. The sooner they arrive in, the sooner you will have them back. Please pay special attention to the second side of the form which lists the proper identification needed for each species of animal.<\/strong> It is very important that this information, along with a signed lease form for any animal that you lease, is sent with your animal approval form. Forms will not be signed if there are leased animals on the form and no lease form, or if there is no extra identification for species of animals that need it. Please also note that each animal may only be leased by one 4-Her and listed on only one 4-Her\u2019s animal approval form. The only exception is that one horse may be leased by two 4-H members and listed on two 4-Her\u2019s animal approval forms. A maximum of 20 animals per species that require an animal approval form may be leased by a member.<\/p>\n

Please note if you would like your Animal Approvals back to you in order to participate in Ossipee Valley Fair, they must be to the office no later than June 14 to allow time for review, processing, and return mailing. Any approvals arriving after June 14th will be date stamped accordingly but cannot be guaranteed to be returned to you before Ossipee Valley Fair due to staff programming commitments & vacations. Please plan accordingly!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaders Association Bylaw Review Committee Open to New Members<\/h4>\n

The Cumberland County 4-H Leaders Association Bylaws are currently under review. The last revision was approved in 2011. The Bylaws Committee is open to any interested 4-H volunteer in Cumberland County who would like to offer guidance and input. The committee will meet this Summer upon review of current Cumberland County and other County Leaders Association Bylaws, to review or propose any changes. The goal is for the committee to have proposed changes for review at the August, 15, 2019 Leaders Meeting. If you are interested in joining this short-term committee please contact Joan Rolfe, 207-688-4820.<\/p>\n

4-H@UMaine Reimbursement for First Time Attendees Reminder<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you attended 4-H @UMaine for the first time this year and would like the Cumberland County 4-H Leader\u2019s Association to reimburse you $25 of the cost, please email sara.conant@maine.edu with your name, who the check should be made out to, mailing address, and your favorite thing about attending 4-H @UMaine and why, by Friday, June 14th.<\/p>\n

Maine Fair Season Insurance <\/strong><\/h4>\n

Maine fair season will soon be upon us! Most Maine fairs now require proof of insurance in order to exhibit livestock at their fairs. Proof of insurance usually is requested for individuals including the exhibitor (4-H member), owner of the animal, and anyone who may be responsible for maintaining the animal at the event (ex. parents or volunteers).<\/p>\n

Some fairs no longer allow homeowner insurance policies. Please check your specific fair to see what they accept. Most fairs do accept the Maine Association of Livestock Exhibitors (MALE) insurance. Below is the information for the MALE insurance.<\/p>\n

The MALE annual membership renewal is in June. The year\u2019s membership ends on June 30<\/span><\/span>. A benefit of being a member of this association includes liability insurance at specific events, including Maine fairs. Please refer to the events that it does cover for the state. Also, as a clarification, as of July 1, 2011, this insurance is a display and exhibitors policy; therefore the following activities are not covered: equine racing, trotting, barrel racing, steeplechase, rodeos, and team penning; and any and all ox, steer, pony and horse rides, wagon, sleigh, and hay rides and dog and sheep dog activities. 4-H Project Records<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

It is time to start thinking about Project Awards in the fall\u2026 are you keeping up your 4-H project records? You should do one project record for each project you will complete. Why do 4-H Project Records and Portfolios?<\/p>\n

  1. Opens doors to the wider 4-H program.<\/li>\n
  2. Your project isn\u2019t done until the records are in.<\/li>\n
  3. The feeling you get when you are finally done!<\/li>\n
  4. You should document all of your hard work this year.<\/li>\n

  6. The nagging will go away!<\/li>\n
  7. You will get your premiums for the fair.<\/li>\n
  8. It is a start towards 4-H Scholarships and National Trips in high school.<\/li>\n

    4-H Camp Opportunities for Children of Military Families
    \n<\/strong>There are numerous wonderful programs being offered to children of military families through special grant programs. These Adventure Camps are sponsored by the Department of Defense to provide quality outdoor experiences for children of Service Members in the active, reserve, or guard components.\u00a0 Specific questions about eligibility should be made to the Tanglewood office at 207.789.5868 or\u00a0    extension.tanglewood4h@maine.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Programs are designed to build self-esteem, trust, teamwork, friendships, skill building, and appreciation of nature through outdoor adventures. Staff of UMaine 4-H Camp and Learning Centers and key outdoor education and adventure partners lead camps. Open sessions for ages 14 \u2013 18 include: Ocean Adventure (6\/25 \u2013 6\/28 and 6\/30-7\/5), Coastal STEM Challenge (6\/23 \u2013 6\/28 and 6\/30 \u2013 7\/5), and for ages 8 \u2013 14, Make and Create STEM Challenge (7\/28 \u2013 8\/2).     June Jamboree Sheep, Swine, Working Steer and Horse Clinic
    \n<\/strong>Oxford County 4-H\u00a0June\u00a0Jamboree is being held\u00a0June\u00a014th through\u00a0June\u00a016th\u00a0at the Fryeburg Fair Grounds, 1154 Main Street, Fryeburg Maine. Workshops are designed for youth completing 4-H project work in the areas of sheep, swine, working steer, and horse. Horseless riders are welcome. Working Steer Try Outs for The Big E are being held\u00a0Sunday\u00a0morning at 10:00.<\/p>\n

    Anyone planning to attend any part of June Jamboree must pre-register and pay online due to insurance regulations. This includes participants, parents, and siblings, who will be present on the fair grounds. All youth must attend with a parent or guardian.<\/p>\n

    The registration fee for the first member of a household will be $20. Family members residing at the same address may register for an additional $10 per person.\u00a0The\u00a0registration\u00a0fee includes tent\/camper space, meals, starting with breakfast\u00a0Saturday\u00a0morning through lunch\u00a0on Sunday, and helps offset the cost of additional insurance, presenter fees, and workshop supplies and materials. Check in begins\u00a0Friday\u00a0evening after\u00a05:00 P.M.<\/p>\n

    Workshops will include\u00a0washing, clipping, showmanship,\u00a0animal handling, marketing, and learning activities around zoonotic diseases.\u00a0Rabies vaccines and tagging for market animals will be available. It is mandatory for anyone planning to sell market lambs or market hogs at Fryeburg Fair to attend Saturday\u2019s workshops in order to have their animals tagged.<\/p>\n

    This event is open to 4-H Families from all counties. Registration is not complete until all forms have been returned to the Oxford County Extension Office, 9 Olson Road, South Paris ME 04281. Anyone wanting to request a reasonable\u00a0accommodation should contact Rebecca Mosley at\u00a0rebecca.mosley@maine.edu<\/a>\u00a0or 1.800.287.1482.<\/p>\n

    If you are coming in only for Working Steer try outs on Sunday morning, you must still pre-register online. There is no registration fee if you are attending tryouts only. The registration fee for Working Steer participants who wish to eat in the dining hall for breakfast and\u00a0lunch on Sunday only is\u00a0$10.<\/p>\n

    The 11th annual Plow Day at Skyline was held on Saturday, May 11th. It was a day of fun activities like horse drawn plow demonstrations. It was open to the public so I even brought along my friend who is not involved in 4-H. My friend and I got a ride on a carriage pulled by two haflingers, and we painted Breyer Stablemates. The company Breyer also had a representative there with a trailer full of Breyer horses for sale. Miniature horses also gave carriage rides. There also was an Icelandic horse, named Brenna, who demonstrated for us some of the gates unique to the Icelandic horse. Other fun activities included watching a \"6demonstration by a blacksmith and seeing some dog tricks.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The equine club met Tuesday, the 21st and we reflected on service projects from spring break and talked about possibly doing a bake sale\/lemonade stand at Tractor Supply\u00a0 Co. We missed the goat club this month because we had to split meetings due to other events. Some members of our club had previously won a ton of horse brushes, so we were asked to bring paint and paintbrushes to paint the brushes. Clara D. showed some of us some drawing and painting tips, like a graphite transfer. Cool designs, clover leaves, horse names and tons of glitter were included in our masterpieces and you can check them out in a display at the Cumberland Fair this year. We\u2019re all also really excited to get back to our mounted meetings this summer!<\/p>\n
