There were many questions on \u201cNo till\u201d gardening.\u00a0 I was pleased to hear that more and more gardeners are learning more about soil health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are you aware that there are an estimated 40 million acres of lawn in the US (equivalent to the size of Wisconsin)!!!? At Cornell Botanic Gardens, there is a small demonstration area devoted to the question of how to construct a \u2018native lawn.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Todd Bittner, a plant ecologist, and his colleagues took up this question about 15 years ago.\u00a0 You can read about their research<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbotanicgardens.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sadly, it is time to put our gardens to bed, unless you have a greenhouse or high tunnel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wishing you a good November!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">David Elliott<a id=\"Speaker\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2023-2024 Cumberland County Master Gardener Speaker Series<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Thursday November 16: The Past &amp; Present Future of Trees with Jeff Tarling | 5:00-6:30 pm <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine-extension.formtitan.com\/ftproject\/events?eventid=a1c8c000007zNUx\"><b>via ZOOM<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn about the history and current status of trees in Maine. What are the best trees to plant? What about invasive trees? Pests are always a concern so what can we do? Are tree conservation efforts in Maine working?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeff Tarling, is a lifelong \u2018tree-hugger\u2019! As Portland\u2019s City arborist, a post he\u00a0 occupied for 34 years, Tarling has helped plant and care for thousands of trees in the city.\u00a0 He is now assisting Cape Elizabeth as their \u2018Tree Warden\u2019 and also works with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maineaudubon.org\/news\/arborist-jeff-tarling-joins-maine-audubon-introduces-speaker-series-in-october\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maine Audubon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the Urban Forestry Specialist. Norm was in the first Cumberland County Master Gardener Class. For 25 years, Norm\u2019s passion for helping others was demonstrated with countless volunteer hours and an estimated 12,000 pounds of produce donated to the Maine Harvest for Hunger Program. Norm passed away in June 2013, leaving an amazing legacy.
