People with questions can now call 211 Maine to speak to a specialist regarding browntail moth biology, management, pesticide options, health concerns, reducing toxic hair exposure, and potential public policy and economic impacts.<\/p>\n<p>This service is available by dialing 211 (or 1-866-811-5695), texting your zip code to 898-211, or emailing\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:info@211maine.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">info@211maine.org\u00a0<\/a>.<br \/>\n211 Maine will serve as a hub for all State of Maine agencies involved in browntail moth issues.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/tools\/whatsnew\/index.php?topic=Portal+News&amp;id=1283353&amp;v=article-2017\">211 info from maine.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_-966913924040507136gmail-col\">\n<div class=\"m_-966913924040507136gmail-content_block\">\n<div id=\"m_-966913924040507136gmail-post-2692\" class=\"m_-966913924040507136gmail-post\">\n<p><a name=\"m_-966913924040507136_nav\"><\/a><a name=\"m_-966913924040507136_top\"><\/a>The\u00a0<strong>Browntail<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Moth<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Euproctis chrysorrhoea<\/em>) was accidentally brought to Massachusetts from its native Europe in 1897, and soon after spread to the rest of New England and also moved into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>\u2018problem\u2019<\/em>\u00a0with this insect derives mostly from the fact that it is armed with defensive, barbed hairs\u2013throughout its life cycle but especially in the very hairy caterpillar stage\u2013which break off and, for many people exposed to the hairs, cause skin rashes, headaches, and even difficulty breathing. The caterpillars have a huge host range of plants that they feed on.<\/p>\n<p>The moths, which fly at night and are active in July and August (<em>and are attracted to light<\/em>), have a wingspread of about 1.5 inches (36-42 mm).
