SUMMARY:Nature Journaling\, UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farms
DESCRIPTION:October 1\, 2026\, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.\nUMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farms\n200 Presumpscot Point Rd.\, Falmouth\, ME 04105\nJoin artist and Master Gardener Volunteer\, Deena Ball\, for a creative\, hands-on workshop exploring the art of nature journaling. Nature journaling is a practice of slowing down and observing the natural world more closely through writing\, drawing\, and other creative techniques. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s to notice something you might otherwise have missed. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll be gently guided through drawing plants at the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm\, composing an attractive and informative journal page\, and working with watercolors and colored pencils. You’ll learn how to combine simple materials and shapes you already know to capture what you see\, create pages that trigger memories\, and develop your own creative approach to nature journaling. \nParticipants will leave with practical techniques for creating a nature journal while cultivating creativity\, observation skills\, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 1\, 2026\n4–6 p.m.\nSheepscot General Store\n98 Townhouse Road\, Whitefield\, Maine\nCost: Free (registration not required) \nAttendees will have an opportunity to meet staff and board members from University of Maine Cooperative Extension and learn about programs provided for communities in Knox and Lincoln counties\, including the Maine Families program for new parents\, 4-H youth development\, home horticulture\, sustainable agriculture\, and community resilience. \nA tour of the farm will be offered by Sheepscot General owner\, Ben Marcus\, highlighting the crops grown there\, and the non-chemical pest control and prevention methods the farm employs\, particularly in its strawberry production. \nPizza\, live music\, and light snacks will be provided. Interested in hand-scale approaches to improve soil health? Join us as we visit the UMaine Extension Demonstration Site at Hurricane Valley Farm to see strategies in action like deep-rooted cover crops\, deep compost mulch\, and permanent raised beds. We will tour the demonstration space\, discuss tools and techniques\, and share what we have learned in the first year of this project. \nThis workshop is part of the Maine Urban Soil Health Project\, a UMaine Extension project to improve soil health education for Maine’s urban and small-scale agriculture community. The Hurricane Valley Farm demonstration site is managed in partnership with Cultivating Community\, a Portland-based non-profit dedicated to farmland access and food justice. \nThis free event is open to the public\, and refreshments will be provided. Start Your 4-H Volunteer Journey is a free\, one-hour virtual session for people who want to learn more about getting involved with 4-H. \nParticipants will learn what makes 4-H unique\, how volunteers can help young people thrive and what volunteer roles may fit their interests and schedules. The session is intended for individuals who are not currently enrolled 4-H volunteers.
