Easily make your own buttermilk substitute with just two ingredients! Perfect for when you don't have buttermilk on hand or need a dairy-free alternative.

Servings 1 cup

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar
  • 1 cup milk

If applicable, see notes for estimated amounts (cups, tablespoons, etc.).

Instructions
 

  • Measure the lemon juice or vinegar into a liquid measuring cup.
  • Fill the measuring cup to the 1 cup mark with milk.
  • Stir together.
  • let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes. You will see some light separation in the milk (curdling).
  • Use as needed.

Storage

  • Refrigerate any leftovers as soon as possible or within 2 hours for safety.
  • Use leftovers within 4 days.

Notes

  • Any milk type (cow's, nut, oat, soy, etc.) or fat percentage (fat-free, low-fat, whole) can be used in this recipe.
