Tips for Using Herbs and Spices

For protein sources like meat, poultry and fish, choose one or more of these herb and spice combinations:

  • Beef: Bay leaf, marjoram, nutmeg, onion, pepper, sage, thyme
  • Chicken: Marjoram, oregano, paprika, poultry seasoning, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme
  • Fish: Dill, dry mustard, marjoram, paprika, pepper
  • Lamb: Curry powder, garlic, rosemary, mint
  • Pork: Garlic, onion, sage, pepper, oregano

For vegetables, experiment with one or more of these herb and spice combinations:

  • Carrots: Cinnamon, cloves, dill, ginger, marjoram, nutmeg, rosemary, sage
  • Corn: Cumin, curry powder, onion, paprika, parsley
  • Green Beans: Dill, marjoram, oregano, tarragon, thyme
  • Potatoes: Dill, garlic, onion, paprika, parsley, sage
  • Summer Squash: Cloves, curry powder, marjoram, nutmeg, rosemary, sage
  • Winter Squash: Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, onion
  • Tomatoes: Basil, bay leaf, dill, marjoram, onion, oregano, parsley, pepper\

Italian Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons dried basil
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 2 tablespoons dried rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Taco Seasoning Mix

  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 3 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper

Salt-Free Seasoning Mix

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dill weed
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
