To be honest, it sat in the box for a long time because I had no clue how to use it. That finally changed when I taught a workshop last year where we made crispy air-fried chickpeas. After one bite, I was hooked! I haven’t stopped using it since, and I realized it is much easier to use than I thought. Whether you are looking to buy one or you have one gathering dust on your counter, this blog covers everything you need to know to get started.

What Are Air Fryers?

Think of an air fryer as a small, high-powered convection oven that fits right on your counter. Instead of frying food in oil, it uses heat and a strong fan to blow hot air around food. This rapid movement of high heat turns food golden brown, giving you that satisfying crunch on the outside while keeping the inside tender.

There are many benefits to cooking with air fryers, including:

Healthier Meals: Air frying uses about 75% less fat than traditional fried food, which can significantly reduce calories and fat in meals.

Speed and Efficiency: Cooks meals faster and uses less electricity than a standard oven.

User-Friendly: They are simple to use, clean, and maintain.

Versatility: You can cook a variety of foods.

Comfort: Helps kitchens stay cool during warm months.

Types of Air Fryers

When shopping for air fryers, you’ll typically see two common designs.

Basket Models: These are the most common and feature a drawer that you pull out to load food into. They are generally more affordable, compact, and perfect for cooking small to medium batches of food. Because the basket is removable, it is easy to shake halfway through the cooking process to ensure food cooks evenly.

Oven (Rack) Models: These look like small toaster ovens with multiple flat wire racks or trays. They often have a glass window so you can peek at your food. These models generally offer a larger capacity, making them ideal for cooking full meals or multiple dishes at once, though they tend to be more expensive.

When shopping, prioritize your household size and budget. Air fryer capacity is measured in quarts. A 2-quart model is perfect for one person, whereas a family of three to five may benefit from a larger 5 to 7-quart unit. While standard new models start around $50 and premium versions around a couple hundred dollars, you can often find great deals on used air fryers at yard sales or secondhand shops.

For all the visual learners out there, check out North Carolina State Extension’s Air Fryer 101 video going over different types of air fryers and what they look like.

When looking to purchase an air fryer it is also important to consider the safety risks of nonstick coatings. According to UMaine Extension PFAS Research Coordinator, Lindsey Pollard, it is important to be cautious with non-stick coatings on cookware, including air fryers. Some of these coatings may contain chemicals called PFAS (commonly referred to as “forever chemicals”), which can be harmful if they flake off into your food or if they get too hot and release fumes into the air. For more information about PFAS and associated risks, visit the EPA’s article Our Current Understanding of the Human Health and Environmental Risks of PFAS. While Maine is working to limit these products (see PFAS in Products Law), even products advertised as “PFAS-free” may still contain PFAS or other harmful chemicals. To stay safe, look for air fryers made of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel. Always check your air fryer for any scratches or peeling, because once a coating starts to chip, it can make its way into your food.

8 Tips for Using an Air Fryer

Below are some basic tips to consider when using an air fryer at home.

Don’t Overcrowd: Leave space for air to move. If the basket is too full, the food will steam, and you won’t achieve the crisp result you are looking for.

Preheat: Letting your air fryer preheat before cooking will help food cook evenly.

Shake Basket: Shake the basket halfway through cooking to ensure food is evenly cooked, and use tongs to remove hot food from the frying basket.

Use the Right Oil: Pay attention to the smoke point of the oil you use, as different oils can only stand a certain amount of heat before they begin to burn and create smoke. For a recommended list of oils to use in an air fryer, visit Louisiana State University AgCenter’s An Overview of the Air Fryer.

Avoid Aerosol Sprays: Store-bought nonstick sprays can damage the coating on your basket. Instead, grease your air fryer basket, as this will ensure the food does not stick or burn.

Watch Out for Flying Food: Light weight food items like slices of bread or cheese can be blown into the heating element when cooking. Use toothpicks to weigh them down.

Reheat: Foods will taste better reheated in your air fryer, as it makes them crispy again.

Cookware: Just about any oven-safe dish is also air fryer safe (assuming it fits). Items such as Pyrex dishware, aluminum foil, and small ceramic dishes all work well.

Food Safety

Like other cooking methods, air frying carries a risk of foodborne illness if food isn’t handled correctly. To keep your meals safe, always use a food thermometer to ensure foods reach their minimum internal cooking temperatures. Additionally, be sure to read your appliance manual before use, and follow a regular cleaning routine to prevent contamination. Lastly, never leave your air fryer unattended while in use to prevent food from burning or creating a fire hazard.

Cleaning Air Fryers

Clean your appliance after every use to prevent grease build-up by washing the removable parts (the basket, tray, and pan) with warm soapy water. If you encounter stuck-on food or baked-on grease, then let everything soak in hot water rather than scrubbing, as scrubbing can permanently damage the nonstick surface. Disposable air fryer basket liners (often made of parchment paper) are great for simplifying cleanup and protecting the nonstick coating, but keep in mind that they don’t catch every drop of grease. Even when using a liner, it is important to wash the removable parts after each use to ensure your appliance stays clean and safe.

Air Fryer Recipes

Are you ready to begin your air fryer journey? A good rule of thumb is that almost any recipe you cook in a traditional oven can be made in an air fryer. To convert your favorite oven recipes for use in an air fryer, simply decrease the temperature by 25–50°F and cut the cooking time by about 20–50%.

For a crispy and savory meal, try our air fried General Tso’s Tofu served with rice and your choice of vegetables.
