What is FoodCorps?

FoodCorps is a nationwide team of AmeriCorps leaders that connects kids to healthy food in school, so they can lead healthier lives and reach their full potential.

Through our partnership with AmeriCorps, we recruit, train, and place emerging leaders into limited-resource schools for a year of service, implementing our three-ingredient recipe for healthy kids:

  • HANDS-ON LEARNING: Ongoing cooking, tasting, and garden-based lessons, field trips and farmer and chef visits, and school garden development and maintenance
  • HEALTHY SCHOOL MEALS: Salad bar and lunch line design, taste tests, cafeteria role modeling, local sourcing and recipe development, and breakfast promotion
  • SCHOOLWIDE CULTURE OF HEALTH: Celebrations, events, rewards, and snacks, schoolwide healthy food promotion, fundraisers, and family, staff, and volunteer engagement

We are creating a future in which all our nation’s children — regardless of race, class, or geography — know what healthy food is, care where it comes from, and eat it every day. Through our work, future generations will grow up to lead healthier and more productive lives.

FoodCorps Service Members serve 11-month terms and they must complete 1700 hours of service (per AmeriCorps requirements); this amount to approximately 35 hours each week. The service site is obligated to pay $7,500.

FoodCorps Maine is hosted by Maine Cooperative Extension. Visit our FoodCorps Maine website.
