How do you get rid of snails and slugs in the garden?

We have been having a problem with snails for a few years now. In the garden, they are pretty much on everything and in the lawn as well. We also have slugs too. We are looking for a way to get rid of them.

Slugs and snails are a scourge in the garden so there is quite a bit of literature and folklore on how to deal with them.   This fact sheet from our home IPM section is a good start.  Generally, a multi-pronged attack will have the most success.  This resource from the University of Minnesota is pretty comprehensive.   If you are up for some night hunting a flashlight and a cup of soapy water are also a good option for quick clean up.  Trapping them is another option. If you have access to chickens then trapping them means a treat for the chickens.
