MGV Background Check Information

It is The University of Maine’s policy to conduct background checks on those who work or volunteer with vulnerable populations. Starting in 2016 all newly enrolled Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers as well as re-enrolled volunteers who have the direct responsibility for the care, safety and security of minors (under 18), the elderly, incapacitated persons, or persons with developmental disabilities who participate in University-sponsored programs, will be asked to complete a background check.

Before a background screening can be processed, a request will need to be submitted by the MGV coordinator and you will then fill out the application for the background check at this secure URL at no cost to you. The Human Resources Department handles the background check process and staff does not receive a copy of the results. Please be aware that any issues arising for the background check will not necessarily preclude you from participation in the program or being unable to volunteer, but it may impact which projects you are ultimately matched with. The University of Maine is committed to providing a safe environment for teaching, learning and community outreach.
