Androscoggin Valley Soil & Water Conservation District – Read ME Ag

Address: Lewiston, ME

Read ME Agriculture: Every year in the spring, volunteer readers across the state head into classrooms to teach about agriculture happening in Maine. AVSWCD helps to organize volunteers with classrooms to maximize the amount of students that can have access to this fun opportunity. The 2025 Read ME Agriculture program will be held March 17 – 21, for Maine grades PK-4th students. This year’s book is called “Farmer Eva’s Green Garden”, about a real New England farmer from Massachusetts, written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, who grew up on a dairy farm in Maine, and illustrated by Christy Hale. Every classroom that participates will receive a copy of the book and accompanying educator’s guide, with aligned classroom activities. Master Gardener Volunteers will receive a training session on the Read ME Ag program and the book itself and then will be assigned classrooms in their local area to read and provide a small activity based on the book. This is a great opportunity for those who like to teach and engage with youth and get them excited about agriculture and growing when its still cold and snowy in March! Invasive Forest Pests – Table at Lewiston Farmers Market (Sundays in June and July) – Join Project Director in Lewiston for the morning at the Farmers Market! Engage the public with helpful information about gardening and farming practices, as well as invasive forest pests. A couple dates will be chosen based on availability of volunteers.
