Island Community Garden, Deer Isle
Address: Church Street, Deer Isle, Maine
Volunteers at the Island Community Garden have an opportunity to help transform an existing garden space in Deer Isle, behind the old elementary school, into a ?teaching garden? where community members can help prepare the soil, tend the strawberry patch, plant, water, feed, maintain and pick vegetables and flowers. There is an opportunity to assist elementary school students in proper techniques for planting seeds, repotting seedlings, and planting vegetable and flower seedlings into the garden. Volunteers learn best practices for creating and maintaining an organic garden. They have an opportunity to partner with other MGVs to organize special events, make presentations on topics of interest, create promotional material and signage, and help build community by forming positive relationships with the public. Volunteers are encouraged to commit 2 hours per week, with times being very flexible.
