At the Native Gardens of Blue Hill volunteers can choose to do tasks like propagating native plants from seed, collecting seed, transplanting and planting plants, weeding and other strategies for garden management including green mulches, pruning, building compost, pruning, editing of natural areas, trail maintenance and trail building, blog writing and photography. If they choose, they can be trained to lead garden tours and do off-site work by helping out with the plant database and writing plant profiles or writing columns to contribute to the garden blog. Volunteers will learn about native plants and habitats appropriate for them. They will learn how to manage compost, prepare new planting areas, and use low input methods to create and maintain a garden of native plantings. Volunteers meet every other Friday morning (9-12am) throughout the growing season to work in the gardens. If volunteers can commit to participating on most Fridays, they will get a chance to participate in the widest variety of tasks and get the most out of the experience. Experienced, more independent volunteers can work on projects on their own schedule. See theBGBH website for more information on the gardens.
