Master Gardeners at the Charlotte Rhoades Park become garden docents as they manage the larval and nectar plants (Host Plants) and observe metamorphosis. A seasonal goal for new MGVs is to be able to identify 3 native cultivars of milkweed (Asclepias) and point out larval and nectaring plants for 5-6 common butterfly species while tending the gardens. We do preach organic gardening practices and expect that our MG?s to know how to answer questions about it, (such as IPM). Our volunteer program starts in mid/end of April on Thursday mornings between 9-1130am. Regarding flexibility, as the season gets going, volunteers can come on our Thursday main volunteer day, or any other day that suits their schedule. Our need is greatest during three periods of time: in May and June as we prepare the beds and plant the annuals and new perennials; the latter two weeks in July as we prepare the gardens for the Butterfly Release benefit; and Elementary School Field Trip visits September 5-15, 2023. The optimal benefit to MG volunteers would come as the result of regular participation, at least twice a month. We are so appreciative of the knowledge and experience that Master Gardeners bring to this project! Our seasoned MGVs also help during the winter with our developing plant database providing specific information about shrubs, trees, annuals and perennials growing at the Charlotte Rhoades.
