In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timberpress.com\/authors\/douglas-w-tallamy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bringing Nature Home<\/em><\/a>, University of Delaware Entomologist and Professor Douglas Tallamy shares his research on native trees that are the best choices as larval hosts for butterflies and moths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quercus (oak) &#8212; example: <em>Quercus rubra<\/em> (red oak)<\/li>\n<li>Prunus (cherries and plums) &#8212; examples: <em>Prunus serotina<\/em> (black cherry), <em>P. virginiana<\/em> (chokecherry), <em>P. pensylvanica<\/em> (pin cherry), <em>P. nigra<\/em> (Canada plum)<\/li>\n<li>Salix (willow) &#8212; examples: <em>Salix nigra<\/em> (black willow), <em>S. discolor<\/em> (pussy willow)<\/li>\n<li>Betula (birches) &#8212; examples: <em>Betula papyrifera<\/em> (paperbark birch), <em>B. populifolia<\/em> (gray birch), <em>B. alleghaniensis<\/em> (yellow birch)<\/li>\n<li>Populus (cottonwoods and poplars) &#8212; examples: <em>Populus tremuloides<\/em> (quaking aspen), <em>P. deltoides<\/em> (eastern cottonwood)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An excellent online resource where you can learn about these and other native trees is <a href=\"https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Go Botony<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question: Do you know of any good pollinator trees that are native to Maine that I could use in coastal Cumberland County?
