There are colonies of small insects living under the tree leaves which are curling in on themselves. These spots are of interest to ants for some reason. Is this a concern or a normal relationship between the tree, the little black insects and the ants?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<p><em>Liz Stanley, Horticulture Community Education Assistant \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div>Those are aphids. The leaves curl and become distorted as the aphids suck the juices out.<\/div>\n<p>The ants are there collecting honeydew from the aphids.\u00a0 You often find these two insects working together.<\/p>\n<p>They may be <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/tree-fruit-insect-pest-black-cherry-aphid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/tree-fruit-insect-pest-black-cherry-aphid&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1655407055936000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2ybMfY1gFWZ9Fu_WRhFQzA\">black cherry aphids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aphids can be controlled by blasting them off with a hose.
