If not, anything friendly to the surroundings?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<div><em>Liz Stanley, Horticulture Community Education Assistant<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Most conifers for Zones 4 &#8211; 5b get very large over time. The few exceptions (with some management) are mugo pine (not native), maybe some dwarfing species and some of the junipers. An example might be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouribotanicalgarden.org\/PlantFinder\/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=c211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.missouribotanicalgarden.org\/PlantFinder\/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode%3Dc211&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1NqBrwcsKzcCCiknzzQnOH\"><i>Juniperus scopulorum<\/i>\u00a0&#8216;<i>Witchita<\/i><i>\u00a0Blue<\/i>&#8216;<\/a>\u00a0(and other varieties) which are upright and resistant to deer browse. These require full sun and well drained soil (most don&#8217;t tolerate wet conditions), so you would have to plant it inward of the dip next to the road.<\/p>\n<p>For a privacy hedge that supports wildlife like birds and pollinators, think about a mix of native trees and shrubs. This creates a hedge that&#8217;s less likely to suffer if there&#8217;s a pest or disease infestation to one species of plant. These organizations have native plant sales going on, with orders due\u00a0<i>very soon<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/waldocountysoilandwater.org\/shop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/waldocountysoilandwater.org\/shop&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3sMU65329I7A_Cqr678hDU\">Waldo County Soil &amp; Water Conservation District<\/a>. They have a lot of native shrubs that like moist soil.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mainenativeplants.org\/plant-finder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mainenativeplants.org\/plant-finder\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2NoWI8kmvqp9-Zql98wvzL\">Maine Audubon&#8217;s Plant Finder<\/a>\u00a0this list can be filtered by sun, moisture, height and what wildlife it supports.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dep\/land\/watershed\/buffer_plant_list.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dep\/land\/watershed\/buffer_plant_list.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0KvoNBBBnhkXLZUTLZTyCN\">DEP&#8217;s Buffer Handbook Plant List<\/a>\u00a0is somewhat old, but plants are organized by height.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">And Maine has many excellent nurseries that sell all kinds of plants including many natives.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/publications\/2502e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/publications\/2502e\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0HYnOgqrwmRB4qbSyTzXtB\">This list<\/a>\u00a0does not include some of the smaller and newer specialty nurseries like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crystallake.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/crystallake.me\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2-QU0hx-YsTHigi40-B3kS\">Crystal Lake Farm and Nursery<\/a>\u00a0in Washington. Some of these smaller nurseries have the time to provide suggestions based on your aesthetic.<\/div>\n<p>Here are just a few plants that come to mind:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/ilex\/verticillata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/ilex\/verticillata\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1jTMeGhOv49x13AYUQhadG\">Ilex verticillata (Winterberry)<\/a>\u00a0 This would be a nice hedge in a moist area, using both male and female plants to produce berries. The stand might get thick enough to provide good privacy even in the winter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/hamamelis\/virginiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/hamamelis\/virginiana\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2YPkHvgUyKKetJBflR3712\"><i>Hamamelis virginiana<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(common witch hazel) &#8211; Handsome branch structure, late fall flowers, yellow fall color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/lindera\/benzoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org\/species\/lindera\/benzoin\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0CL6ciEve8hVLQq3ofpGfC\">Lindera benzoin (northern spicebush)<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Caterpillars of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly (Papilio troilus) use this\u00a0<span id=\"m_-55456172882363904m_-272546032356234274gmail-gloss1\" role=\"tooltip\">species<\/span>\u00a0for food. The green caterpillars have large, black, fake &#8220;eye&#8221; markings that scare away predators. With sweetly aromatic foliage that turns yellow in the fall, this plant is a good choice for shady, moist or wet places in the garden.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=phop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant%3Dphop&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1681499441550000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2kKp2PytB5lRqH5_53Am5y\"><i>Physocarpus opulifolius<\/i>\u00a0(common ninebark)<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; deciduous, 3 to 10 ft. tall, blooms white, pink May and June, prefers well drained soil, sun or part shade.
