If you are in Zone 4 (the colder part of the state) then you probably won’t have to mow until mid to late May.\u00a0 Any bulb listed in the catalog as early spring\u00a0 and “naturalizing” will work for you and some that are also low growing include:<\/p>\n
Muscari (<\/a>grape hyacinth), Crocus and\u00a0<\/span>Siberian Squill<\/a>.\u00a0 All of these should be past bloom and their\u00a0<\/span>strap like\u00a0foliage should be lower\u00a0than 4″ but if not they can be mowed.\u00a0 These also naturalize nicely.\u00a0 Other options to grow around the perimeter might be\u00a0<\/span>Bloodroot<\/a>, ranunculus, anemones,\u00a0bluets,<\/a>\u00a0and creeping thyme.\u00a0 Some\u00a0<\/span>novelty bulbs\u00a0include\u00a0<\/span>Chionodoxa<\/a>\u00a0(Glory of the Snow),\u00a0<\/span>Pus<\/em>chkinia<\/em><\/span>\u00a0(striped squill), and\u00a0species tulip<\/a>.\u00a0 Remember\u00a0these bulbs would need to be planted in the fall.<\/span><\/p>\nIf you are in zone 5 the spring moves quickly so the lower growing it is the better off –Bluets<\/a>, crocus, squill, and Chionodoxa work best.<\/p>\nIf you are willing to do\u00a0“No mow May”\u00a0<\/a>(click on the underlined blue text for more info) the options open up to things like Forget me nots and some wildflowers will all be possible.\u00a0 Violets, clover, and dandelions are natural first responders\u00a0to an unmowed lawn.\u00a0 \u00a0If you go that route then this\u00a0tip sheet<\/a>\u00a0will help.<\/p>\nIf you want to “get the lawn back” under strict control then encourage the wildflower but don’t let the dandelions\u00a0or violets form clumps.\u00a0 Clover is a great addition to any lawn from a pollinator’s point of view but you will need to mow high all summer so the flowers can form.<\/p>\n
I have attached a picture of my backyard in mid-May last year.\u00a0 We mow the front and side and let the flowers bloom in back.\u00a0 I am in zone 5. Muscari (<\/a>grape hyacinth), Crocus and\u00a0<\/span>Siberian Squill<\/a>.\u00a0 All of these should be past bloom and their\u00a0<\/span>strap like\u00a0foliage should be lower\u00a0than 4″ but if not they can be mowed.\u00a0 These also naturalize nicely.\u00a0 Other options to grow around the perimeter might be\u00a0<\/span>Bloodroot<\/a>, ranunculus, anemones,\u00a0bluets,<\/a>\u00a0and creeping thyme.\u00a0 Some\u00a0<\/span>novelty bulbs\u00a0include\u00a0<\/span>Chionodoxa<\/a>\u00a0(Glory of the Snow),\u00a0<\/span>Pus<\/em>chkinia<\/em><\/span>\u00a0(striped squill), and\u00a0species tulip<\/a>.\u00a0 Remember\u00a0these bulbs would need to be planted in the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n If you are in zone 5 the spring moves quickly so the lower growing it is the better off –Bluets<\/a>, crocus, squill, and Chionodoxa work best.<\/p>\n If you are willing to do\u00a0“No mow May”\u00a0<\/a>(click on the underlined blue text for more info) the options open up to things like Forget me nots and some wildflowers will all be possible.\u00a0 Violets, clover, and dandelions are natural first responders\u00a0to an unmowed lawn.\u00a0 \u00a0If you go that route then this\u00a0tip sheet<\/a>\u00a0will help.<\/p>\n If you want to “get the lawn back” under strict control then encourage the wildflower but don’t let the dandelions\u00a0or violets form clumps.\u00a0 Clover is a great addition to any lawn from a pollinator’s point of view but you will need to mow high all summer so the flowers can form.<\/p>\n I have attached a picture of my backyard in mid-May last year.\u00a0 We mow the front and side and let the flowers bloom in back.\u00a0 I am in zone 5.
