How would I best and most easily terminate the red clover and how long should I plan on doing that before I plant my garlic?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<div><em>Jonathan Foster, Special Project Assistant\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<p>As you may know (since you&#8217;ve selected it), red clover is an excellent green manure\/cover crop in the home garden, fixing nitrogen in the soil and providing organic material to improve the texture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agriculture\/soil-health\/cover-cropping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/agriculture\/soil-health\/cover-cropping\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1686835236422000&amp;usg=AOvVaw24zgJkVTjyNcIMDitzYR7H\">UMaine Extension Cover Cropping page<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sare.org\/publications\/managing-cover-crops-profitably\/legume-cover-crops\/red-clover\/#:~:text=In%20spring%20in%20cool%20climates,%E2%80%9Cgrass%20seed%E2%80%9D%20drill%20boxes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.sare.org\/publications\/managing-cover-crops-profitably\/legume-cover-crops\/red-clover\/%23:~:text%3DIn%2520spring%2520in%2520cool%2520climates,%E2%80%9Cgrass%2520seed%E2%80%9D%2520drill%2520boxes.&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1686835236422000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2J-r9X5TMSwTVgoDaeAcnY\">Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) page on red clover<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because red clover is a perennial, it is usually left to overwinter for a season, or even two, for maximum nitrogen addition to the soil (you can see in-depth research on this in the SARE link above). But however long it&#8217;s in your garden, it&#8217;s a beneficial green manure for the soil.<\/p>\n<p>I agree with your plan to terminate the crop before planting your clover, as you don&#8217;t want it competing with your sprouting garlic next spring. In the garden, as mentioned in the UMaine link above, this is typically done by physical incorporation&#8211;that is, turning it into the soil using a hoe and\/or garden fork, and making sure it&#8217;s nicely chopped up and evenly spread about to decompose in your garden bed. There isn&#8217;t any reason why you can&#8217;t wait until very close to garlic planting to do so, in order to maximize the amount of nitrogen fixed. As noted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.unh.edu\/resource\/growing-garlic-new-hampshire-fact-sheet#:~:text=Garlic%20grows%20well%20in%20cool,(for%20more%20Southern%20sites).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.unh.edu\/resource\/growing-garlic-new-hampshire-fact-sheet%23:~:text%3DGarlic%2520grows%2520well%2520in%2520cool,(for%2520more%2520Southern%2520sites).&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1686835236422000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0scAu8U8RSbpc-Ev4mvgj6\">this UNH Extension page on growing garlic<\/a>, garlic\u00a0likes rich, well drained soil with plenty of organic material, so the incorporated green manure will be perfect.<\/p>\n<p>As for how much nitrogen is fixed, I can&#8217;t give you exact figures on that (and was unable to find any studies on single season use of clover and resulting N totals from soil testing), but it will be more than when you started, and you&#8217;ll also get the additional benefit of improved soil texture.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;One final note: if you see the clover beginning to bloom, consider cutting it back a bit.
