I was wondering if it would be okay to leave the pine needles as mulch around them, thus inhibiting weed growth. Would this cause any negative effect on the nine bark shrubs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<div><em>Lynne Holland, Horticulture Professional <\/em><\/div>\n<p>Ninebark (PHYSOCARPUS\u00a0<i>opulifolius<\/i><span class=\"gmail_default\">)\u00a0<\/span>is a very hardy native shrub and generally doesn&#8217;t need much TLC.\u00a0 The compacted exposed soil is really the question here.\u00a0 Leaving the pine needles and other leaves in that area is actually a recommended strategy.\u00a0 The October issue of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/gardening\/2023\/10\/02\/maine-home-garden-news-october-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/gardening\/2023\/10\/02\/maine-home-garden-news-october-2023\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1699362013233000&amp;usg=AOvVaw23HPndIwqHZM0zddHPAPa4\">Maine Home Garden News\u00a0<\/a>actually talks about &#8220;leaving the leaves&#8221; in non-lawn areas of the garden.\u00a0 (click on the underlined blue text to go to the resource).<\/p>\n<p>The other thing to consider, in the long term, is how shady that spot will become.\u00a0 Ninebark likes full sun but obviously survives in less-than-ideal\u00a0conditions.
