We have lots of them sitting in marine clay. The clay is oozing up around several in our backyard. I assume the roots are rotting and the tree is at risk of toppling? I guess the trees are dying? Two of the trees are only 10.5 yards away from our house. I am in steep negotiation with my husband to have several removed, particularly the ones near our home. I don&#8217;t thing putting soil down into the holes will save the trees?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<div><em>Jonathan Foster, Home Horticulture Outreach Professional<\/em><\/div>\n<p>What I see isn&#8217;t the typical presentation for root rot, though it is interesting from a horticultural perspective (though I&#8217;m sure less so than from the homeowner&#8217;s perspective&#8230;!). Generally, we would look for aboveground symptoms in the tree itself, such as needle browning or general decline&#8211;you can read more in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plantpathology.ca.uky.edu\/files\/ppfs-or-w-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/plantpathology.ca.uky.edu\/files\/ppfs-or-w-22.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1705587114193000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ralLU7lfPmNRe31EDkYtV\">this Univ of KY page on Eastern white pine problems<\/a>. If you have noticed any of those symptoms, you could send along some photos for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>After consulting with some colleagues, I&#8217;m thinking the ooziness\u00a0you&#8217;re seeing is more likely to be something like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/pests\/uppdl\/files\/factsheet\/snowmold-turf08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/pests\/uppdl\/files\/factsheet\/snowmold-turf08.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1705587114193000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0hRwnqmyMPic41IFIE-8Gz\">snow mold<\/a>, a fungal pathogen that preys on turfgrass under snow or in cool, wet conditions. There are multiple types\u00a0of snow mold, so you could always submit\u00a0a sample of the material to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/ipm\/plant-disease\/plant-disease-diagnostic-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/ipm\/plant-disease\/plant-disease-diagnostic-testing\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1705587114193000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0b2CEPO8ju-gbswEurwWED\">UMaine Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab<\/a>\u00a0for confirmation (I am sending your original picture to them to see if they can verify just from the one shot). If this is the case, it&#8217;s separate from any health issues with your trees, though it may be an indicator of your soil conditions.<\/p>\n<p>All of that said, as you note in your question and have no doubt mentioned in your household negotiations, the heavy clay soil conditions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umn.edu\/managing-woodlands\/managing-eastern-white-pine-forests#:~:text=Growing%20conditions&amp;text=Range%20of%20eastern%20white%20pine,compete%20with%20more%20aggressive%20hardwoods.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.umn.edu\/managing-woodlands\/managing-eastern-white-pine-forests%23:~:text%3DGrowing%2520conditions%26text%3DRange%2520of%2520eastern%2520white%2520pine,compete%2520with%2520more%2520aggressive%2520hardwoods.&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1705587114193000&amp;usg=AOvVaw00i4Gc-MXi81lKZtL83kxq\">are not ideal for white pines<\/a>\u00a0(they like it sandy and well-drained) and you are probably looking at decline over the long run, with the attendant risk of them dying off and\/or falling.
