Do you know where the best land\/soil would be for that? And do you have any other tips on what to look for?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Answer:<\/h3>\n<div><em>Jonathan Foster, Home Horticulture Outreach Professional<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Generally, our team works to advise home gardeners, as opposed to potential commercial operations, so this may be outside our scope. But I will offer what help I can. Lavender\u00a0needs well-drained soil, especially through winter. Sandy, sandy loam, or gravelly soils are ideal. It will struggle with heavy clay or poorly drained soils. Moreover, lavender\u00a0prefers more alkaline soil (so a higher pH) but pH can be adjusted using soil test recommendations for any soil.\u00a0The Utah State Univ Extension has a nice info sheet for growing lavender\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/yardandgarden\/research\/english-lavender-in-the-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/yardandgarden\/research\/english-lavender-in-the-garden&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1706967210192000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0-eg-SBG2Nq91viBrDWjKN\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The USDA has a really neat tool called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov\/app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov\/app\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1706967210192000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2uN3ilUmF0xc5grWForclX\">the Web Soil Survey<\/a>\u00a0that will let you do some early research into what parts of Maine might have the soil you&#8217;re looking for. You can zoom to Maine on the map, use the AOI tool in the icons just above the map to select an area, and download information about the soil there.
