Healthy Acadia’s Downeast Gleaning Initiative partners with farms and food assistance programs to make healthy food available to more people in the community. Volunteers are trained to harvest or collect fruits and vegetables at local farms, gardens, and farmers markets and to deliver this produce to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and other recipient organizations. Volunteers travel to beautiful local farms, learn how food is grown and harvested, and make an important difference in the diets of local community members. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring home freshly harvested produce. Volunteers may work independently or as part of a team and can participate according to a schedule and frequency that works best for them.<\/p>\n
